Pa. House OKs bill to study alternatives to Keystone Exams

The Keystone Exams, which are part of a Pennsylvania high school student’s graduation requirements, could soon be under the microscope following a vote last week in the state’s House of Representatives asking that a study be done to determine if alternatives could be used instead. The vote was 191-10, indicating broad bipartisan support for the measure in the narrowly divided House. It would require the commonwealth’s education department to look at whether other standardized tests that high school students take, such as the SAT, ACT or Smarter Balanced assessments, could be used in its place. Tri-Valley Artifact Show slated for May 16

The Tri-Valley Artifact Show will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post 902, 124 W. Pike St., Houston. Free evaluation of artifacts and relics will be available. Exhibitors will be ready to show, buy, or trade a variety of artifacts, including arrowheads, tools, and other items. The event is sponsored by the Indian Artifacts Collectors Association of the North East, an organization of Native American artifact collectors. Cost for admission is $4. DVSSP launches new support group

Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania (DVSSP) launched a new Significant Other Support Group to meet the needs of those often overlooked in domestic violence situations - the partners, family members, and friends of those how have experienced or are experiencing domestic violence. The program launched on May 4. The free, virtual group will meet Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. via Zoom and is designed for those supporting a loved one impacted by domestic violence.
