Local education champion appointed to Pennsylvania State Board of Education

Robert (Bob) Mitchell, renowned for his unwavering commitment to education, was elected to the prestigious Pennsylvania State Board of Education on June 30, 2023.

This appointment signifies a pivotal moment in Mr. Mitchell’s illustrious career, dedicated to the transformation and advancement of education in the commonwealth.

Having played a crucial role as School Director at Jefferson-Morgan since December 2009, Mr. Mitchell has been a strong presence, influencing positive change within his local educational community. His impactful tenure on the IU1 Board, where he currently serves as the treasurer representing Greene County School Districts since March 2014, underscores his dedication to regional educational development.

Residing in Jefferson with his wife Charlene, Mr. Mitchell is not only a professional but a personification of family and community values. His two older children, Josh and Kirsten, now thriving in the Pittsburgh area, stand testament to the enduring impact of his guidance and support.

Former Pennsylvania State Representative Pam Snyder, instrumental in starting the process of getting Bob elected, commended Mr. Mitchell’s dedication, stating, “I have known Bob my whole life. He is a dedicated instructor at our county Career and Technology Center and has had a huge impact on many students over the years.

Serving as a school director in my home district, I have witnessed his passion for public education and his commitment to the students. He will serve the State Board of Education well.”

Pennsylvania State Senator Camera Bartolotta, who helped finish what Pam Snyder started, expressed her congratulations, saying, “Today, I join the entire Rockets family at Jefferson-Morgan School District in congratulating Mr. Bob Mitchell on his appointment to the State Board of Education. Bob brings years of knowledge and dedication to the betterment of student achievement and academic success. In addition to his leadership roles, Mr. Mitchell has been an invaluable asset to the Greene County Career and Technology Center since 1990, serving as an Electrical Instructor. This position highlights his comprehensive understanding of the current state of education.

Academically, Mr. Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from California University of Pennsylvania, showcasing a robust foundation in pedagogical principles. His commitment to continuous professional development is evident through his attainment of a Vocational II Certification (Permanent Instructional Certification) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which enables him to instruct at the Greene County CTC. Beyond traditional education, Mr. Mitchell’s certification as a PennDot Flagger Trainer for the Gas & Oil Industry reflects his adaptability and versatility in addressing the evolving needs of the workforce.
