Twenty-seven descendants placed roses on the marker memorializing Revolutionary War Soldier Reuben Thorpe during a ceremony held on Sunday at Irwin Memorial Cemetery in Ohiopyle.
Nearly 100 attended the service, which included a gun salute and taps from the Gen. Arthur St. Clair Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution, and the honor guard from AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood.
The commemorative marker was a project of the local Great Crossings and Fort Necessity chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Members of seven NSDAR chapters honored Thorpe with a wreath.
Thorpe was a private, scout, spy and minuteman in the war.
The marker was dedicated as a way to remember and honor Thorpe’s role in the country’s path to liberty, NSDAR noted in a release.
