Music review: David Duchovny – 鈥楬ell or Highwater鈥
s one of the main characters of 鈥淭he X-Files,鈥 David Duchovny played FBI agent Fox Mulder and captured the hearts of every viewer interested in cases involving the paranormal, conspiracy theories and proving the existence of extraterrestrial life.
I was one of the faithful viewers planted in front of the television each week for nine seasons as Mulder and Scully investigated cases of the truly bizarre. With the recent announcement that the popular show will be returning to television after signing off in 2002, Duchovny entertains fans with his first venture into music.
No need to roll your eyes or shake your head in disbelief with yet another actor trying to make a memorable mark in music.
鈥淗ell or Highwater鈥 is a credible effort by the 54-year-old actor. After learning how to play the guitar a few years ago, the New York City native eases into his debut release with the charm and spirit of a seasoned professional. The 12 new tracks penned by Duchovny in his apartment possess traces of Jakob Dylan, Pete Yorn and Jackson Browne.
The title track is a soulful, passionate, gritty and honest love song that highlights Duchovny鈥檚 folksy voice. Soul-stirring lyrics covered with melodic folk and rock textures showcase Duchovny鈥檚 writing abilities on songs like 鈥淟et It Rain,鈥 鈥淯nsaid Undone鈥 and 鈥淎nother Year.鈥 Duchovny鈥檚 debut album follows his first novel released in February.
Duchovny has stated that the making of the album has been a dream come true. With 鈥淗ell or Highwater,鈥 the actor, director and writer turned musician can confidently continue to pursue his musical aspirations without hesitation.
