Belle Vernon presents ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ this March

By Melissa Gibson

Belle Vernon Area High School students are preparing for their annual spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

“Our spring musical always provides an opportunity to showcase our students in the cast, crew and orchestra,” said Producer Mark Surovchak. “Many of these students attend rehearsal five and six days per week and dedicate hours of outside time learning and memorizing their scripts and working to perfect their vocals.”

As band director, music teacher and director of the high school musical, Surovchak knows the effort and commitment it takes to bring a performance from the beginning to a full production.

“Character development takes time so our students are continuously working to shape their character to provide a memorable experience for our audiences,” Survochak said.

The winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, “The Drowsy Chaperone” debuted in Toronto in 1998 and opened on Broadway in 2006.

The musical is a show within a show of sorts. It follows a down-on-his-luck musical theater fan who listens to his favorite performance based on a 1920’s comedy.

He sits in a chair and narrates, as the show comes to life on stage, featuring gangsters, a couple on the eve of their wedding and others causing mayhem.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for ages 3 and up.

Performances are 7 p.m. March 13, 14 and 15 and 2 p.m. March 16 at the Belle Vernon Area High School auditorium.
