‘Suffs’ musical coming to Benedum Center
If Lin-Manuel Miranda could turn monetary policy in the late 1700s and early 1800s into a Tony Award-winning blockbuster with “Hamilton,” the struggle for the right to vote by American women would seem to hold similar dramatic possibilities.
That’s what Shaina Taub pulled off with “Suffs,” a musical about the fight for the 19th Amendment, which was ratified in 1920. Thanks to “Suffs,” Taub became the first woman to win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in the same season. It opened on Broadway in 2024 and its story includes historical figures like Woodrow Wilson and Ida B. Wells.
“Suffs” is being presented by the Pittsburgh CLO at the Benedum Center starting next Tuesday. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and July 23-24, 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. July 25 and 2 p.m. July 26.
