I am writing in reference to the article published in the Greene County Messenger on the April 1-7, 2016 issue titled “Statues tell history of U.S. war, unity.”

As a veteran, I thought the article was well-written and showcased the history and sacrifice of Greene County’s citizens. However, there is one correction that must be made. In the article, Karen Fisher Younger, chairperson for the humanities department of history at Waynesburg University, stated, “I think its amazing that we have it on our campus.” The “it” she is referring to is the Soldiers and Sailors monument located in the Waynesburg Borough parks.

Although the author of the story, John Lydic, stated the parks belong to Waynesburg Borough,

Karen Fisher Younger stated and implied that the parks were part of the Waynesburg University campus. She may have misspoken or not; however, it must be understood to all, especially to all faculty, staff and even the students of Waynesburg University, that the parks belong to the citizens of Waynesburg and that the university should be grateful that the parks surround their campus.
