Raiders finish 4th in rifle championships
Waynesburg Central picked the right day to shoot its best score of the season as the Raiders finished fourth in the WPIAL Rifle Championships Thursday at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon 缅北禁地men鈥檚 Club.
The Raiders actually tied for fourth with Butler with a score of a near-perfect 799, but Butler won on criteria, 鈥渪-count,鈥 65x-50x.
Woodland Hills won its third title in a row with a score of 800-59x. Hempfield was a very close second with 800-57x.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 the highest score of the year,鈥 praised Waynesburg rifle coach Rich Rush. 鈥淲e are so new to this. We shot extremely well.鈥
Seven of the eight shooters scored 100, led by a count of 100-8x by Andrew Guess and Emily Ozohonish.
Camryn Dugan, Cameron McIe and Travis Elliott all shot 100-6x for the Raiders. Emily Tuttle (100-5x), Cameron Cernuska (100-4x), and Dylan Henkins (99-7x) also factored in the final score.
The scores of Selena Phillips (99-5x) and Dylan Crockard (98-6x) did not count in the final score for the Raiders.
鈥淭hey were nervous. I could tell. That鈥檚 why our 鈥榵-count鈥 was so low. They were taking a little longer between shots, taking longer to sight,鈥 said Rush.
The Raiders were the Section 1 champions with a 7-1 record. McGuffey was second at 6-2.
鈥淲e received our plaque today. That was nice,鈥 said Rush.
Butler鈥檚 Tiffany Carlson was the lone shooter to hit a perfect score of 100-10x.
Mt. Lebanon finished fifth with a score of 797-58x and McGuffey was sixth with a count of 795-57x.
The rifle season turns to individual pursuits Thursday when the field returns to the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon 缅北禁地men鈥檚 Club for the WPIAL Individual Rifle Championships.
