Mikes open with 18-2 win at Frazier
Carmichaels broke the opening game of the season Thursday afternoon wide open with six runs in the top of the fifth inning as the visiting Mikes cruised to an 18-2 non-section baseball victory at Frazier.
Mike Ludrosky鈥檚 two-run sparked the Mikes鈥 four-run output in the top of the fourth inning. Joel Spishock鈥檚 solo home run extended the visitors鈥 lead to 5-0 through four innings.
Carmichaels broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning and then invoked the mercy rule with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning.
The Commodores scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
鈥淚鈥檓 happy,鈥 said Carmichaels coach Dickie Krause. 鈥淲e had a rough scrimmage with Laurel Highlands on Tuesday. We just weren鈥檛 ready.
鈥淵esterday, we scrimmaged Monessen and couldn鈥檛 hit at all.鈥
The official start of the season apparently sparked the Mikes.
鈥淭onight, we hit the ball well. Joel Spishock and Jacob Wamsley are the key for us. If they hit, we鈥檒l be OK,鈥 added Krause.
Spishock went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a solo home run, and single for five RBIs. He also scored four runs.
鈥淭he kid can put the bat on the ball, that鈥檚 for sure,鈥 Frazier coach Craig Kordich said of Spishock. 鈥淵ou know you鈥檙e going to get a quality opponent when you play a team from Carmichaels, Now we know what we have to work on.鈥
Wamsley had a triple and drove in two runs, and Nathan Broadwater doubled.
Jacob Kinsell started and lasted five innings for the win. He struck out nine and walked only one.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a pretty good pitcher,鈥 Kordich said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to see one like that early in the year. But we have to attack the ball and be more aggressive. We also have to work on fielding the ball and knowing what to do with the ball when we get it.鈥
Matthew Barrish finished up on the mound for the Mikes with a scoreless sixth.
Cody Morris lasted four innings for the Commodores, striking out six and walking three. He also had a double for Frazier鈥檚 lone extra-base hit.
Both teams are off until Wednesday when Carmichaels hosts Brownsville and Frazier travels to South Allegheny.
