J-M’s Broadwater tops week with no-hitter
Another week 鈥 another series of postponements and cancellations of games for Greene County baseball and softball teams.
You would think we would be used to it living in Southwestern Pennsylvania and dealing with rain and even some snow in the early part of April.
I鈥檓 sure coaches and players are not going to get too upset about it, but it鈥檚 tough for all involved when instead of having two games per week, you now have four or five games pushed together in a week.
Some arms on the mound and in the circle might be tested, and are probably going to be sore.
But anyhow, let鈥檚 look at some headlines in Week 2 of spring sports on the diamond in the county.
A no-no in the county
Jefferson-Morgan鈥檚 Jacob Broadwater pitched the county鈥檚 second no-hitter of the season in the Rockets鈥 10-0 victory over Geibel Catholic last Wednesday.
Broadwater threw six innings (game was called in the sixth due to the 10-run mercy rule) with 10 strikeouts and just one free pass in J-M鈥檚 first win of the season.
The Rockets鈥 offense collected 11 hits, and was led by Isaac Dean (two doubles) and Eli Rafail (triple).
J-M continued its winning ways on Monday with an 11-0 triumph at West Greene. Gage Clark struck out eight for the win on the mound and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of triples. The Rockets were at Jeannette on Wednesday.
Another week, another Lampe
In two games last week, West Greene鈥檚 McKenna Lampe went 6-for-7 with four runs scored, seven stolen bases, a double, a home run and three RBIs.
McKenna currently leads the Lady Pioneers with a .737 batting average through six games. Her twin sister Madison is right behind her at .667.
Through six games, the Lampe sisters have registered 14 hits apiece with 21 combined stolen bases. The sophomore twins have scored 25 of West Greene鈥檚 57 runs this season through six games.
The Lady Pioneers maintained their winning ways at the beginning of the week with home wins against Monessen (6-2) and Carmichaels (12-2 in six innings).
Eye-popping numbers for a freshman
Freshman Jade Renner has become West Greene鈥檚 primary pitcher and is showing no signs of inexperience at the varsity level.
Before the start of the week, Renner had made five appearances (four starts) and allowed nine runs (seven earned) in 26 innings for a 1.88 ERA. She also has tallied 29 strikeouts to just three walks.
Spishock鈥檚 big day
Carmichaels鈥 Joel Spishock had himself a day to remember last Wednesday against Beth-Center in the Mikes鈥 17-6 Section 1-AA triumph.
The senior first baseman smashed two home runs and had a whopping eight RBIs in the contest.
鈥淢y mentality at the plate is always to keep my shoulder in and drive the baseball,鈥 Spishock said. 鈥淚鈥檓 never really trying to yank the ball out of the park. I just had two good swings today and they were both able to go over the fences.鈥
Other notable numbers this week
4 鈥 The Lady Maples rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Jefferson-Morgan, 6-5, on Monday in Section 2-A action. J-M broke a 3-3 deadlock with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Mapletown regrouped for the come-from-behind victory. Sara Chory鈥檚 double tied the game and she would get knocked in for the game-winning run with a RBI hit from Elisa Clark.
11 鈥 The Raiders rang up 11 runs in their Section 3-AAA triumph against Southmoreland on Monday. Waynesburg scored three runs in each the first and second innings, and pulled away in the contest with four runs in the fifth. Hunter Robison and Dalton Riggenbach registered three hits apiece in the win.
2 鈥 The Mapletown baseball squad has already doubled its win total from last year and was currently 2-4 on the season through Tuesday. The Maples鈥 wins were against Clay-Battelle (12-8) and Geibel (15-0).
54 鈥 Unlike the previous two seasons, the Waynesburg Central softball team has gotten off to a good start and after its 10-4 section win at Charleroi on Tuesday, the Lady Raiders were 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Section 3-AAA. Through seven games, the offense had scored 54 runs.
