Scotties down Rockets at PVCC, 265-337
BULLSKIN TWP. 鈥 The eclipse never materialized in northern Fayette County Monday afternoon, blocked by rain showers and cloud cover.
But, no matter to Southmoreland and Jefferson-Morgan, as the Scotties opened the high school golf season with a 265-337 non-section home win over the Rockets at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Ryan Lemmon was medalist with a 7-over 41, three strokes better than the Scotties鈥 No. 1 man Josh Redding.
Redding has an off round, and expects to rebound as he makes a bid to qualify for another state championship.
鈥淚 had no flow today,鈥 said the senior. 鈥淚 had a good start. I just didn鈥檛 feel right. I have days like this. It happens.鈥
Redding already has committed to school, so he is ready for a final run.
鈥淚鈥檝e committed to York. That takes the pressure off,鈥 said Redding, adding, 鈥淚鈥檇 like to make it back to states.鈥
Zach Holoman (53), Dakota Kaylor (62), and Walter Ulishney (65) closed out the scoring for Southmoreland.
Bobby Coles was the low man for the Rockets with 56. Kyle Clayton (63), Megan Pecjak (58), Bryce Bedilion (64), and Jesse Wolfe (96) also counted in the final score.
鈥淭hey need to play,鈥 said veteran coach John Curtis after his squad鈥檚 first official match. 鈥淭hey haven鈥檛 played a lot over the summer.
鈥淭he golf program was cut, but the parents raised money to get the program back.鈥
鈥淲e鈥檙e at square one. We鈥檙e starting over. They have so much to learn,鈥 continued Curtis. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a short season. There鈥檚 not a lot of time to practice.
鈥淭hey have to play. That鈥檚 what I have to instill into them. We have to learn together.鈥
