WAYNESBURG 鈥 As an active member of 4-H, Lindsey Gilbert won her share of ribbons showing just about any animal with four legs, from horses, goats, lambs, dairy cattle, steers and her 鈥渟pecialty鈥 鈥 .rabbits.

Then last year, Gilbert, 18, had a dream fulfilled when she was crowned the 2016 Greene County Fair Queen and being no stranger to the livestock barns, Gilbert felt at home handing out ribbons to other kids.

鈥淚t was great during fair week to see how other kids reacted to winning a ribbon,鈥 she said.

Gilbert, a 2016 graduate of Waynesburg Central High School, is on track to receive a degree in sociology this December at California University of Pennsylvania. The daughter of James and Heather Gilbert of Waynesburg plans to obtain her real estate license and then perhaps attend law school.

But in the meantime, she has some business to attend to, like crown the new fair queen Aug. 6.

鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be bittersweet, no doubt about it,鈥 Gilbert said, thinking about the moment she relinquishes her crown.

鈥淚 have been so busy this past year, with queen responsibilities and school, so I may feel some relief. But it has been such an exciting year, one that has impacted my life.鈥

One highlight for Gilbert was attending the state pageant last January in Hershey, a requirement fair queens from across the state must fulfill. 鈥淚 met 59 other girls and today I am friends with many of them,鈥 she said.

Her advice to the new queen is quite simple: 鈥淒on鈥檛 blink because the time will go by so fast. And also, take as many pictures as possible so you don鈥檛 miss a thing.鈥
