Waynesburg Central’s Homet places at Powerade
CANONSBURG 鈥 Waynesburg Central鈥檚 Cole Homet didn鈥檛 achieve the goal of winning gold, but he was able to wrestle back to earn a medal during Day 2 of the Powerade Tournament on Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School.
Homet dropped his fifth-place consolation bout, 4-2, to Oak Park River鈥檚聽 (Illinois) Nico Bolivar to place sixth at 120.聽
The Raider freshman allowed an escape to Bolivar with 1:17 remaining in the second period before recording a takedown to claim a 2-1 lead with 47 seconds left in the frame.
Homet chose bottom to start the third, but Bolivar locked in a cradle to earn three near-fall points and take the two-point advantage with 37 seconds remaining.
鈥淟ooking back, I probably should have chose neutral to start the third period because I had already taken him down once, but the reality of it is I need to get better on bottom,鈥 Homet said. 鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 happy I lost that match, but I was pleased with how I did at this tournament being just a freshman. I have three more years left. I just need to work on some stuff this week in practice and hopefully I can carry it over in a match.鈥
Homet pinned Amonn Ohl of St. Joe鈥檚 Academy in 2:51 during the fourth round of consolations to guarantee himself a spot on the podium. The freshman earned a 5-1 decision over Parkersburg, West Virginia鈥檚 Garett Donahue in the fifth round of consolations. He was pinned by Shaler鈥檚 Ryan Sullivan in 2:19 during the sixth round of consolations.
Waynesburg Central鈥檚 Luca Augustine suffered a 5-3 setback in sudden victory to Seneca Valley鈥檚 Nick Montalbano in the fourth round of consolations at 152 to finish out of medal contention by one victory.
Teammates Colby Morris and Noah Tustin also lost in the fourth round of consolations.
Morris dropped a 7-2 decision to Malvern Prep鈥檚 Nicholas Feldman at 160.
Tustin, a freshman, was pinned by in 3:29 by Middlebrooks.
The Powerade Wrestling Tournament, rated the second toughest in the country, got underway last Friday as Homet topped Mifflin County鈥檚 Christian Fisher, 3-1, at 120 pounds to advance to the round of four.
The freshman was eager to have a chance to medal in a nationally-ranked tournament after the opening win.
鈥淚t is nice to do well in this tournament,鈥 Homet said after Friday鈥檚 victory. 鈥淲e wrestled the Beast of the East last week and now this tournament, so we are getting the best competition.
鈥淚 felt like I really have been working on my bottom wrestling lately and it paid off today. I was also excited to take him (Fisher) down because he was the sixth seed. I like flying under the radar.鈥
Cole鈥檚 brother, Kyle Homet, graduated from Waynesburg Central in 2018 and currently wrestling for Gardner-Webb University.
鈥淚t is great to keep the wrestling tradition alive for my family at Waynesburg,鈥 the younger Homet said. 鈥淜yle came in over his break last weekend and helped me out a great deal.鈥
Morris upset Zane Hinzman, the No. 3 seed from Parkersburg South, W.Va., to advance to Day 2 at 160.
Tustin pinned Thomas Jefferson鈥檚 Trystan Alava in 2:01 during third-round consolation action at 182 pounds on Friday.
Augustine was pinned in 5:57 by Malvern Prep鈥檚 Henry Hague in the quarterfinals at 152. Augustine held a 2-0 lead and was only trailing 4-3 when Hague caught him with the fall late in the bout.
