Still time to go: Greene County Fair continues today, Saturday

A week of games, rides, food and fun kicked off in Greene County on Sunday, with farmers and 4-H members preparing their animals for a week of shows and sales.
Carly Whyte, 17, of Waynesburg, has been in 4-H raising animals to show at the Greene County Fair since she was 9 years old.
鈥淚鈥檝e always showed sheep, and I鈥檝e done every species at least one or two years,鈥� Whyte said.
This is Whyte鈥檚 first year showing a steer, which has been a much more time-consuming project, as they need to be kept for about a year.
鈥淚t鈥檚 much longer,鈥� Whyte said. 鈥淭he lambs you keep for a few months.鈥�
Along with the steer, goats and horses, many bring smaller, fluffier creatures to show off.
Siblings Brielle and Deakin Whipkey of Waynesburg have been raising rabbits for several years. At home they have more than 20 rabbits.
鈥淲e pretty much just pick out the ones we want, bring them in, and then we groom them here. We pretty much do all the work here,鈥� Brielle, 11, said.
For Deakin, 14, the fair is the best part of raising rabbits.
鈥淚 like getting to hang out with people at the fair,鈥� he said.
Tad Hoy, who owns Driftridge Farms in Spraggs, was at the fairgrounds getting his own stall set up. Hoy is the barn superintendent, and helps everyone get organized.
鈥淚鈥檓 in charge of making sure everything gets in here and set up,鈥� Hoy said.
鈥淣ow that I鈥檓 in here and got the animals in here, I鈥檓 feeling pretty good. That鈥檚 always the biggest part,鈥� he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 hoping for a good year.鈥�
The fair continues today and tomorrow, with a number of opportunities for good old fashioned family fun.
At 10 a.m. today, the 4-H and FFA tractor driving competition is scheduled, followed by the Stockmens Contest. The Kids Power Wheels Derby begins at 6:30 p.m., and the nightly entertainment is Chaos in Coal Country Demolition Derby. The show features hardcore compacts and hardcore hobby stock.
Special events on the fair鈥檚 final day on Saturday include a 5 p.m. wood carving auction and Truck and Tractor Pulls at 7 p.m., featuring super stock 4脳4 trucks, limited pro/super farm tractors and pro modified 4-wheel drive trucks.
Both days feature Patriot Games Laser Tag between 3 to 11 p.m., bingo at 4 p.m. and wood carving shows throughout the day. The carnival will be open from 5 to 11 p.m., and the Home and Garden exhibit hall opens at 4 p.m.
Admission is $10.
