Local roundup: Lady Maples rally past B-C in volleyball
Mapletown won the final three sets for a 3-1 non-section victory over visiting Beth-Center in girls volleyball action Monday night.
Beth-Center won the opening set, 26-24. Mapletown (6-4) secured the victory with set wins of 25-21, 25-10 and 25-23.
Mapletown’s stats leaders were Isabella Garnek (11 kills), Miranda Wise (10 kills), Rowen Eisminger (8 kills), Treslee Weston (8 kills), Bri Ashton (19 digs, 5 aces), Devan Clark (14 digs), Alexis Perry (15 digs, 3 aces), and Bailey Rafferty (30 assists, 16 digs, 7 aces).
Girls soccer
Chartiers-Houston 2, Waynesburg Central 1 — The Lady Bucs took over sole possession of second place in Section 2-A with a victory over the Lady Raiders.
Waynesburg Central is 6-3-0 in the section and 9-3-0 overall. Chartiers-Houston improves to 7-2-0 in the section and 11-2-0 overall.
Thursday, Sept. 28
Carmichaels 192, Beth-Center 250 — The Mikes finally won their final Section 3-AA golf match Thursday afternoon after two rainouts at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Mason Lapana and Dustin Hastings shared medalist honors for Carmichaels (12-0, 14-0) with 1-under 36. Dom Colarusso shot 38. Liam Lohr (40) and Patrick Holaren (42) closed out the scoring. Zach Murphy’s 49 did not count.
Luke Amon was the low man for the Bulldogs with 3-over 40. Parker Amos (49), Karson Keys (51), Sonya Peterson (49), and Nick Wrenshaw (61) also scored for Beth-Center. Jordan Lowman’s 62 was not used.
Frazier 3, West Greene 0 — The Lady Commodores remained undefeated in Section 2-A after sweeping past visiting Frazier in a girls volleyball match.
Frazier (8-0, 9-1) swept to victory by the scores, 25-17, 25-16, 25-17.
Gracen Hartman finished with a double-double for Frazier with 18 assists and 15 service points. Maddie Salisbury had eight kills and three blocks. Addison Schultz finished with 14 service points and seven kills. Molly Yauch had a strong defensive effort with 12 digs.
Boy soccer
Belle Vernon 4, Waynesburg Central 2 — The Raiders tied the Section 3-AA match early in the second half, but the Leopards regained the led 19 minutes later for a road victory.
Owen Haught tied the match for Waynesburg when he scored off Dalton Taylor’s pass at 38:31 of the second half.
Belle Vernon (9-1-0, 10-2-0) went back ahead on Brandon Yeschenko’s second goal of the match at 19:10. Yeschenko set up Trevor Kovatch’s second goal of the match 10 minutes later.
Kovatch set up Yeschenko for the match’s first goal at 34:47 of the first half. Kovatch followed with a goal at 32:13.
Taylor scored Waynesburg’s first goal at 19:10, set up by Taylor.
Belle Vernon’s keeper Bryce Burkhart made five saves. Waynesburg’s Nick Willard stopped 14 shots.
Girls soccer
Waynesburg Central 7, Brownsville 1 — Ella Miller scored a hat trick and set up a goal to lead the Lady Raiders to a non-section road victory.
Bree Clutter scored a goal and assisted on two others. Brynn Kirby, Rylei Rastoka and Emma Kindervater all scored one goal each.
Wednesday, Sept. 27
Carmichaels 3, Mapletown 2 — Carmichaels rallied from a two-set deficit for a come-from-behind Section 2-A victory against visiting Mapletown.
The Lady Maples (4-4, 5-4) ran out to a 2-0 lead with sets wins of 25-16 and 26-24.
The Lady Mikes (3-5, 3-5) won the final three sets, 25-21, 25-17 and 19-17.
Carmichaels’ Chloe Mitchell had a triple-double with 18 assists, 17 digs and 18 service points. Camryn Anderson (10 assists, 23 service points) and Bailey Barnyak (11 kills, 24 digs) recorded double-doubles. Ani Cree (2 aces, 8 kills, 17 digs, 9 blocks), Calli Eddy (2 aces), Pacey Pratt (8 kills, 28 digs), and Payton Plavi (16 service points) also contributed in the victory.
Treslee Weston (12 kills, 8 digs), Miranda Fox (11 kills, 5 blocks), Isabella Garnek (9 kills), Rowan Eisminger (6 kills, 8 digs), Brianna Ashton (38 digs), Devan Clark (28 digs), Alexis Perry (15 digs), Marley Seward (11 digs, 6 aces), Sydney Byrne (6 digs), and Bailey Rafferty (12 digs, 36 assists) were stat leaders for Mapletown.
Waynesburg Central 3, Bentworth 1 — The Lady Raiders built a two-set lead in the Section 3-AA match and then closed the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.
Waynesburg won the first two sets by 25-18 scores. The Lady Bearcats took the third set, 25-22.
Bentworth had solid performances by Zoie McDonald (3 aces, 21 assists), Kayla O’Dell (4 kills, 9 digs), Abigail Chester (4 kills, 5 digs, 1 block), Chelsea Dindal (11 kills, 8 digs), Sydney Gonglik (6 kills, 5 blocks), Haylee Wolfe (23 digs), Nora Lindley (2 blocks), and Sofia Gaussa (6 digs).
Girls soccer
Waynesburg Central 4, Bentworth 0 — The Lady Raiders scored all four goals in the second half for a Section 2-A road victory.
Waynesburg goes to 6-2-0 in the section and 8-2-0 overall. Bentworth slips to 2-5-1 in the section and 4-6-1 overall.
Ella Miller scored two goals, and Kaley Rohanna and Rylei Rastoka netted one each. Lake Litwinovich had two assists, and Rohanna and Rastoka set up one goal apiece.
Boys golf
Waynesburg Central 190, Ringgold 238 — Waynesburg Central prepped for the WPIAL team playoffs with a non-section victory against Ringgold at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
Braden Benke and Chase Phillips shared team honors for the Raiders (11-3) with 4-over 37. Derek Turcheck and Jarett Tretinik both shot 38. Rykan Gustafson closed the scoring with 40.
Dylan Callaway fired a 2-under 31 for Ringgold (1-12). Brice Kowall (44), Trevor Benson (56), Evan Anderson (52), and Dom Zatek (55) rounded out the scoring.
Boys golf
Carmichaels 193, Fort Cherry 239 — The Mikes earned a non-section victory over the Rangers at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Mason Lapana and Dom Colarusso shared medalist honors for Carmichaels (14-0) with 2-under 35. Dustin Hastings shot 36 and Liam Lohr finished with 38. Patrick Holaren’s 49 closed the scoring.
Alan Tarolli was the low man for the Rangers (10-6) with 38.
Boys cross country
Waynesburg Central 27, Avella 28; Avella 28, Washington 30; Waynesburg Central 26, Washington 33; Washington 25, Burgettstown 30; Waynesburg Central 25, Burgettstown 26; Avella 24, Burgettstown 31 — The Raiders swept a 3-AA home meet Tuesday with close wins against Avella, Washington and Burgettstown.
Washington’s Wesley Riddle finished first with a time of 19:07.
Waynesburg Central’s Travis Tedrow was second, followed by Washington’s August Ralston, Avella’s Westley Burshianti and Eli Maidment, Burgettstown’s Maximus Maltony, Waynesburg’s Will Maxwell and Mason Schroyer, and Burgettstown’s Morris Harvey and Landen Snyder.
Girls cross country
Waynesburg Central 26, Avella 31; Waynesburg Central 15, Washington 50; Waynesburg Central 15, Burgettstown 50 — The Lady recorded three Section 3-AA victories Tuesday afternoon on their home course.
Avella’s Abigail Dolanch won the race in 24:54. Waynesburg Central’s Reiley Shultz and Addison Blair, Avella’s Annemarie Kisner, Washington’s Ada Ralston, Burgettstown’s Deedra Closser, Avella’s Laurel Bongiorno, Burgettstown’s Lydia Haskins, Waynesburg’s Lexi Rush and Carmichaels’ Aislinn Linderman.
Tuesday, Sept. 26
Frazier 3, Mapletown 0 — The Lady Commodores remained undefeated in Section 2-A play with a victory at Mapletown in girls volleyball action.
Frazier (4-3, 5-3) had set wins of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-19.
Frazier was led by Gracen Hartman (8 kills, 23 assists, 10 service points), Grace Vaughn (8 kills, 15 digs), Allie Monack (16 assists), Molly Yauch (21 digs, 8 service points), Addison Schultz (7 blocks), and Maddie Salisbury (4 blocks).
Rowan Eisminger (8 kills, 4 digs), Bri Ashton (3 kills, 18 digs, 2 aces), Isabella Garnek (4 kills), Alexis Perry (11 digs), Devan Clark (10 digs, 2 aces), Sydney Byrne (6 digs), and Bailey Rafferty (17 assists, 6 digs) had strong performances for Mapletown (4-3, 5-3).
Carmichaels 3, Avella 0 — The Lady Mikes returned home with a straight-sets Section 2-A victory.
Carmichaels (2-5, 2-5) swept to victory by the scores, 25-23, 25-19, 25-9.

Waynesburg Central 2, Brownsville 1, OT — Dalton Taylor scored in overtime to lift the Raiders to a Section 3-AA road win.
Owen Haught, set up by Ryon McCartney, scored the tying goal late in the second half for Waynesburg.
Corey Isaac set up Ryan Haluska for Brownsville’s goal in the first half.
Waynesburg’s Jobe McCartney made five saves. Brownsville’s Jacob Davis stopped nine shots.
