Local roundup: Allison scores 30 as Pioneers roll past Hundred
Lane Allison rang up a game-high 30 points and Matt Wassil recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds as West Greene romped over visiting Hundred, W.Va., 78-37, in a non-section boys basketball game Monday night.
Parker Burns also was strong on the boards with 12 rebounds for the Pioneers (3-2).
Colton Sandy scored 18 points for the Hornets (0-3) who also got 11 points from Trey Huggins.
Girls basketball
California 53, Carmichaels 36 – Hayley Gibson scored a game-high 21 points and California gradually pulled away from host Carmichaels for a Section 4-AA victory.
Rakiyah Porter added 13 points for the Lady Trojans (1-1, 3-4) who led 9-6, 23-15 and 39-23 at the quarter breaks.
Megan Voithofer paced the Lady Mikes (0-1, 1-5) with 15 points and Ali Jacobs followed with 13.
Charleroi 59, Jefferson-Morgan 30 – Riley Jones tossed in a game-high 23 points as the Lady Cougars took down the Lady Rockets in a non-section game..
Bella Carroto and Ella Sypolt each added 10 points for Charleroi (4-1).
Ava Wood and Addyson Teagarder both scored six points for Jefferson-Morgan (2-5).
Saturday, Dec. 16
Doug Conroy Memorial Duals – Albert Gallatin split two matches, Jefferson-Morgan won 3-of-4 matches, and host Ringgold won both matches.
Albert Gallatin defeated Ligonier Valley, 48-24, after trailing 24-6.
The Colonials’ Julius Pool (107), Jason Myers (189), Austin Coddington (285), and Kage Churby (145) won by forfeit. Colton Kelley (152), Landon Conroy (172), and Collin Rockwell (215) all won with pins.
Jefferson-Morgan had wins against Albert Gallation (53-20), Ligonier Valley (66-12), McKeesport (52-12), and Chartiers Valley (48-24).
Connor Pinchok (127), Colton Humphreys (133), Johnny Gilbert (145), Brenton Barnhart (152), Chase Frameli (160), Adam McAnany (215), Carson Sweeney (114), James Dulaney (121), and Mason Sisler (285) against the Colonials, while Logan Holbort (139), Landon Conroy (172), James Standish (189), and Julius Poole (107) posted wins for Albert Gallatin.
Ringgold defeated Ligonier Valley, 66-12, and Jefferson-Morgan, 46-20.
The Rams’ Evan Tolliver (121), Nico Bove (127), Brennan Ambrose (133), Braydon Campbell (139), Cristian Lowther (145), Brenton Barnhart (152), Gavin Mincin (172), Owen Conroy (189), Jake Conroy (215), and Andrew Bruce (107) were victorious. Carson Sweeney (114), Chase Frameli (160), and Mason Sisler (285) won for Jefferson-Morgan.
Friday, Dec. 15
Carmichaels 72, Geibel Catholic 42 – Dominic Colarusso and Robbie Wilson-Jones each scored 16 points as the Mikes defeated the visiting Gators in a non-section boys basketball game.
Aydan Adamson and Colin Andrews also reached double figures for Carmichaels (3-3) with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The Mikes were up 17-12 after the first quarter and outscored Geibel (0-6) 39-16 in the middle two frames to take control.
Freshman Gary Tarbuk scored 14 points and Tommy Kolencik followed with 10 for the Gators, who recently found out starter Seth Dolan would miss the rest of the season due to an injury suffered in a loss to Brownsville on Tuesday.
Girls basketball
Jefferson-Morgan 49, Carlynton 26 – Kayla Larkin tossed in a game-high 18 points as the Lady Rockets flew past the host Lady Cougars in a non-section game.
Jefferson-Morgan led 15-8, 26-14 and 42-18 at the breaks.
Ava Wood scored 17 points for J-M (2-4) and Ali Ostrich added 10 points.
Lucy Vetter and Carlee Hughes were the top scorers for Carlynton (3-3) with 11 and 10 points.
Thursday, Dec. 14
Geibel Catholic 45, Carmichaels 34 – Emma Larkin poured in 35 points to propel host Geibel Catholic past Carmichaels in non-section girls basketball action.
The Lady Gators (4-2) led 11-9 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime, then outscored the Lady Mikes 14-8 in the third and 10-8 in the fourth to gradually pull away for the victory.
Alayna Simon and Arianna Plaxi each scored 10 points for Carmichaels (1-4).
Brownsville 52, Jefferson-Morgan 20 – The Lady Falcons got a game-high 17 points from Ava Clark and 16 from Skyler Gates on their way to a non-section win over the host Lady Rockets.
Brownsville, which improved to 6-1, led 15-5, 30-12 and 45-16 at the breaks.
Jefferson-Morgan falls to 1-4.
Waynesburg Central 57, West Greene 14 – Peyton Cowell recorded a double-double and the unbeaten Lady Raiders put four players in double figures on their way to a non-section victory at West Greene.
Kaley Rohann led Waynesburg (6-0) with a game-high 18 points and was followed by Avery Davis (12), Cowell (11) and Josie Horne (10). Cowell also had 10 rebounds.
Kendra Tharp scored five points for the Lady Pioneers (1-5).
Boys basketball
West Greene 57, Waynesburg Central 53 – Lane Allison racked up a game-high 27 points to key the Pioneers’ non-section victory over the visiting Raiders.
West Greene (2-2) jumped out to a 17-5 advantage in the first quarter but Waynesburg (2-4) rallied in the second to pull within 26-23 at halftime. The Pioneers used a 16-10 edge in the third quarter to go up 42-33 and hung on from there.
Patrick Durbin contributed 13 points for West Greene.
Alex Vansickle was one of three Raiders to hit double digits in scoring with 17 points. Cole Headlee added 12 and Jackson Dean had 11 while Alex Eck grabbed 15 rebounds.
Frazier 55, Jefferson-Morgan 41 – The Commodores jumped out to an early lead and stayed in front the rest of the way in defeating the visiting Rockets for their third win in a row after an 0-3 start.
Dalian McManus led all scorers with 25 points for Frazier (3-3). Brock Alekson and Brennen Stewart added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Commodores led 14-6, 21-16 and 40-31 at the breaks.
Dayton Marion scored 14 points for J-M (5-2) and Houston Guesman followed with 12.
Rifle
Mt. Lebanon 795-55x, Waynesburg Central 785-42x – The teams competed virtually with the Blue Devils securing the non-section win.
Faithlyn Vukmanic was the top scorer for the Raiders with 100-6x. Emily Burnfield also hit the center mark with a score of 100-5x.
Logan Crouse (99-8x), Emma Lawson (98-6x), Abbi Kidd (98-6x), Carrigan Henry (98-5x), Joe Withrow (96-4x), and Wyatt Franklin (96-2x) rounded out the scoring for Waynesburg.
Mt. Lebanon’s Sarah Jamison had medalist honors with 100-9x. Sigmond Kukla (100-7x), Elise Stock (100-8x), Adam Burich (100-6x), and Beyza Sendl (100-7x) also scored 100.
Wednesday, Dec. 13
Burgettstown 44, Jefferson Morgan 24 — The Blue Devils returned home with a Section 1-AA wrestling victory against the Rockets.
Jefferson-Morgan surged into the lead after pins from Chase Frameli (160), Grant Hathaway (172), Brock Bayles (189), and Adam McAnany (215).
Burgettstown then ran the final six bouts with two pins, two major decisions, a decision and a forfeit.
Bentworth 51, West Greene 21 — The Bearcats received four forfeits in a Section 1-AA road victory at West Greene.
Alex Rusilko (285), Baylee Oreski (107), Nick Krutules (121), and Chris Vargo (133) all won by forfeit for Bentworth.
The Bearcats’ Bryce Crowson (139), Owen Ivcic (152), and Vitali Daniels (189) won by fall. Ty Watson (145) and Brayden Taggart (189) secured decisions.
The Pioneers’ Noah Collins (114), Seth Burns (127), and Colin Whyte (215) had pins, and Hayden Hamilton (160) won a 4-0 decision.
Tuesday, Dec. 12
Monessen 68, Carmichaels 37 – The Greyhounds led 39-22 at halftime and kept rolling in the final 16 minutes for a non-section boys basketball home victory against the Mikes.
Monessen outscored Carmichaels (2-3) in the second half, 30-15.
Aydan Adamson led Carmichaels with 14 points.
Timothy Kershaw paced Monessen (2-1) with a game-high 17 points. Lorenzo Gardner and Dennis Hawkins both finished with 12 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 65, Beth-Center 52 – The Rockets put five players in double figures and out-scored the host Bulldogs 43-27 in the second half to secure a non-section victory.
Jase Bedillion, with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Dayten Marion, with 12 points and 18 boards, both had double-doubles for Jefferson-Morgan (5-1), which also got 14 points from Collin Bisceglia, 13 points from Houston Guesman and 11 points from Max Ivanusic.
Jason Zellie paced B-C (1-4) with 12 points, Jonah Sussan followed with 11 and Ryan Minert and Brody Tharp each tallied 11.
Beth-Center held leads of 12-8 after the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime before the Rockets rode a 23-13 third quarter to a 45-36 advantage, then put the game away with a 20-14 edge in the fourth.
Frazier 66, Mapletown 28 – Brennen Stewart tossed in a game-high 19 points and Dailan McManus added 17 as the Commodores rolled past the visiting Maples in a non-section game.
Conlan Higbee also reached double figures for Frazier (2-3) with 10 points.
Roger Gradek topped Mapletown (0-3) in scoring with nine points.
The Commodores led 17-6, 35-12 and 54-22 at the breaks.
Girls basketball
Frazier 51, Jefferson-Morgan 43 – Allie Yauch racked up a game-high 22 points as the Lady Commodores beat the host Lady Rockets in a non-section game.
Frazier (3-3) led 20-12, 30-17 and 43-26 at the breaks.
Kayla Larkin paced J-M (1-3) with 20 points and Ava Wood chipped in with 12.
Rifle
Hempfield 796-64x, Waynesburg Central 778-41x – The Raiders had a tough time on the road against the Spartans, although Faithlyn Vukmanic was right on target in the non-section loss.
Vukmanic was perfect with a score of 100-10x.
Emily Burnfield (99-4x), Abbi Kidd (99-4x), Logan Crouse (99-8x), Emma Lawson (97-4x), Wyatt Franklin (95-3x), Joe Withrow (96-5x), and Corbin Flanagan (93-3x) closed out the scoring for Waynesburg.
The Spartans’ Brooke Fanala and Leah Podlascewski were also perfect with scores of 100-10x.
Cyrus Orezeck (98-8x), Lucas Kaylor (100-8x), Haley Gallagher (98-5x), Aiden McKuicker (100-6x), Izabel Orezeck (100-9x), and Chloe Snyder (100-8x) also scored for Hempfield.
