Local roundup: Gilbert sparkles as Lady Pioneers thump California
Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert went 3 for 3 with a single and two triples, drove in three runs and scored three times as West Greene thumped visiting California, 15-1, in a four-inning Section 2-A softball game on Monday.
Gilbert allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four.
The Lady Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp finished with a double, single and two RBIs. Emmaline Beazell drove in three runs. Ella Scott smacked a two-run double.
Gabby Pendo doubled and scored the lone run for the Lady Trojans. Kera Urick took the loss with three walks and two strikeouts.
Carmichaels 4, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Mikes scored three unearned runs for a Section 2-A road victory.
Carmichaels led 2-0 after the first inning, 3-0 after two and scored the final run in the top of the seventh inning.
Kaitlyn Waggett, Bailey Barnyak and Carys McConnell drove one run apiece for Carmichaels.
Barnyak allowed only one hit, a double by Alexis Perry in the fifth inning, walked two and struck out 12.
Losing pitcher Devan Clark walked three and struck out two.
Chartiers-Houston 6, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Meadow Ferri allowed only one hit and took care of all of the outs with 21 strikeouts in a Section 2-A road victory.
Emily Bazzoli struck out four and walked five for the Lady Rockets (1-2, 1-4). Kayla Larkin’s single was the lone Jefferson-Morgan hit.
Saturday, April 13
Waynesburg Central 4, Brownsville 3 – Derek Turcheck’s double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Waynesburg Central to a Section 4-AAA baseball victory over visiting Brownsville.
Turcheck paced the Raiders (4-0, 5-0) with three hits and two RBI. Austin Suber doubled.
The Falcons (0-5, 0-5) rallied with three runs to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Harlan Davis led Brownsville with a double, triple and two RBI.
C.J. Corwin earned the win and Hunter Pelehac took the loss.
Track & Field
TSTCA Invitational — Waynesburg Central’s Jack Ricciuti cleared 5-11 for sixth place in the high jump in the annual invitational held at West Mifflin. Jeffrey Blair was seventh in the discus with a top throw of 116-10.
Chartiers-Houston Invitational — West Greene’s Eryka Hackney finished fourth in the 400 (1:04.41), fifth in the 200 (28.71), and eighth in the 100 (13.79) in the meet that featured smaller schools.

Wednesday, April 10
Waynesburg Central 7, Yough 1 – Trenton Zupper went 3 for 3 and was the winning pitcher as Waynesburg Central remained unbeaten with a Section 4-AAA baseball win over visiting Yough.
Zupper allowed just one run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Austin Surber finished up the one-hitter with a scoreless seventh.
Derek Turcheck and Ethan Kiger each had a hit and two RBIs for the Raiders (3-0, 4-0) who also got doubles from Surber and Tyler Groves.
Losing pitcher Landon O’Donnell had the lone hit for the Cougars (2-2, 2-5).
West Greene 10, Mapletown 0 – Darren Knight threw a one-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts as the Pioneers blanked the visiting Maples in a five-inning Section 1-A game.
Hayden Hamilton had a double and four RBIs for West Greene (2-2, 2-2) which also got three hits from Johnny Lampe, a double and an RBI from Kameron Tedrow and two hits and an RBI from Colten Thomas.
Losing pitcher Spencer Yeager gave six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 â…“ innings. Reliever Jeremiah Mick allowed one hit with two strikeouts but walked six in 1 â…” innings.
AJ. Vanata had the only hit for Mapletown (0-4, 1-6).
Softball
Carmichaels 15, Avella 0 – Lady Mikes sophomore Bailey Barnyak threw a four-inning perfect game in a Section 2-A road win over the Lady Eagles.
Barnyak struck out 10 for her seventh career no-hitter. She also went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Lady Mikes’ Carys McConnell belted a home run and drove five runs. Ali Jacobs had a triple and single. Kaitlyn Waggett had a pair of singles and scored three runs. Megan Voithofer contributed two hits and four RBI.
Avry Rado took the loss for the Lady Eagles (0-2, 3-3).
Chartiers-Houston 10, West Greene 0 – Meadow Ferri held the Lady Pioneers to two hits and struck out nine as the Lady Bucs returned home with a Section 2-A victory called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Ferri hit a two-run home run and Taryne Drilak blasted a three-run shot for Chartiers-Houston. Lauren Rush doubled.
Losing pitcher Payton Gilbert doubled in the first inning.
Jefferson-Morgan 16, California 6 – The Lady Rockets scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule for a Section 2-A home victory.
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 1-1 in the section and 1-3 overall. The Lady Trojans slip to 0-4 and 0-6.
Kayla Larkin was the winning pitcher and sparked Jefferson-Morgan’s offense with a home run and double. Emilee Bazzoli also homered in the victory.
South Park 4, Waynesburg Central 0 – Sydney Sekley tossed a two-hitter and struck out 16 in the Lady Eagles’ Section 4-AAA home victory.
Waynesburg Central is 0-1 in the section and 2-5 overall. South Park improves to 3-0 in the section and 6-1 overall.
Tuesday, April 9
Brownsville (girls) 75, Beth-Center 50; Waynesburg Central 119, Beth-Center 30; Beth-Center 63, West Greene 25; Waynesburg Central 97½, Brownsville 47½; Brownsville 95½, West Greene 14½ – The Lady Raiders remained undefeated with Section 6-AA girls track & field wins over Beth-Center and Brownsville on Tuesday.
The Lady Raiders’ Reiley Shultz (1,600, 6:55.50; 3,200, 15:45.50), Linzy Rush (high jump, 4-6), Railey Bochna (long jump, 14-6), Brynn Kirby (triple jump, 28-0; javelin 100-11), and Jaden Tretinik (pole vault, 6-6) all had first-place overall finishes.
West Greene’s Eryka Hackney won the 400 (1:07.0).
Brownsville (boys) 79, Beth-Center 47; Waynesburg Central 126, Beth-Center 19; Beth-Center 77, West Greene 20; Waynesburg Central 109, Brownsville 37; Brownsville 110, West Greene 13 – The Raiders rolled to a Section 6-AA sweep against the Bulldogs and Falcons.
The 3,200 relay (9:31.70), 400 relay (44.90), 1,600 relay (3:53.60), Ace Litwinovich (110 high hurdles, 17.30), Zack Andrews (300 intermediate hurdles, 44.60), Nate Fox (800, 2:16.50), Will Maxwell (3,200, 13:02.60), Jack Ricciuti (high jump, 5-10), Teagen Crouse (triple jump, 35-11), Jeffrey Blair (discus, 114-8), Roan Tustin (shot put, 40-8), Dalton Taylor (javelin, 140-1), and Mason Schroyer (pole vault, 13-0) all had overall first-place finishes for Waynesburg Central.
Baseball
Waynesburg Central 6, Yough 3 – Ethan Kiger’s run-scoring single broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Raiders to a 10-inning Section 4-AAA win over host Yough.
Alex VanSickle started the game-winning rally with his second double and fourth hit of the game, advanced to second on Derek Turcheck’s single and came home on Kiger’s hit. Nick Willard and C.J. Corwin followed with run-scoring singles.
Corwin earned the win with three innings of relief for Waynesburg (2-0, 3-0) which got three hits from Willard and a double from Cameron Russell.
Landon O’Donnell had two hits and Frankie Yuvan and Hayden Eicher each had an RBI for the Cougars (2-1, 2-4).
West Greene 8, Mapletown 1 – The Pioneers broke the Section 2-A game wide open with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning for a road victory over the Maples.
West Greene’s Hayden Hamilton and Mapletown’s AJ Vanata battled through five innings in a 1-1 tie.
Hamilton went the distance for the win, allowing one run and one hit with 15 strikeouts and four walks. Josh Mick had the Maples’ lone hit, a single in the first inning.
Darren Knight had three hits and drove in three runs for West Greene.
Vanata started and worked five innings, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts. Jeremiah Mick took the loss.
Mapletown (0-3, 1-5) scored first when Zack Brewer brought Josh Mick home on a suicide squeeze.
Softball
West Greene 14, Jefferson-Morgan 5 – Emmaline Beazell was 4 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and four runs as the Lady Pioneers beat the host Lady Rockets in a Section 2-A game.
Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert struck out seven and walked one and also reached base four times with a double and three walks and scored three runs for West Greene (1-0, 2-2).
The Lady Pioneers also got a pair of doubles and five RBIs from Ella Scott, a double, single and three RBIs from Samantha Zimmerman and two hits and an RBI from Ali Goodwin.
West Grene scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second to take an 8-0 lead and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Brooklyn Snyder was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (0-1, 0-3) which also got doubles from Kayla Larkin and Sayde Stickovich. Losing pitcher Emilee Bazzoli struck out three and walked six.
Monday, April 8
Carmichaels 11, Springdale 2 – Dom Colarusso doubled, singled and drove in four runs as the Mikes blasted the visiting Dynamos in a non-section baseball game.
Robbie Wilson-Jones doubled twice for Carmichaels (4-0).
Winning pitcher Liam Lohr didn’t allow a hit or walk while striking out three in two innings in combining with three other Mikes hurlers on a three-hitter.
Carmichaels led 2-0 until breaking the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
