Local roundup: Rockets edge Trojans 1-0 in 9-inning battle
Brenton Barnhart singled and scored on an error in the top of the ninth inning to give Jefferson-Morgan a tense 1-0 win at California in Section 1-A baseball action on Friday.
Brock Bayles stranded two Trojans runners in the bottom of the ninth with a game-ending strikeout to earn the win.
Deakyn DeHoet tripled and singled and Barnhart had two hits for the Rockets (1-6, 3-6) who also got a pair of singles from Brayden Ellsworth.
Chase Cicchitto doubled for California (2-5, 2-6) which was limited to just four hits.
Starting pitchers John Woodward for J-M and the Trojans’ Caden Monticelli both turned in stellar performances.
Woodward allowed two hits and two walks with 13 strikeouts in six innings. Monticelli gave up six hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.
Bayles surrendered two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in tossing the final three innings.
Losing pitcher Logan Hartley coughed up just the one unearned run on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts in two innings.
Waynesburg Central 12, Greensburg Salem 9 – Alex VanSickle doubled, singled and scored three runs in the Raiders’ Section 4-AAA win over the visiting Lions.
Waynesburg scored six runs in the first inning and one in the second to take a 7-0 lead and push the gap up to 11-2 after four innings before withstanding a late Greensburg Salem push.
Ethan Kiger had three hits and two RBIs, Grant Pack knocked in three runs and Trenton Zupper smacked a triple for the unbeaten Raiders (6-0, 7-0). Winning pitcher Tyler Groves gave up two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
Braedon Leatherman doubled for the Lions (4-4, 4-5). Brody Chismar took the loss.
Fort Cherry 9, Carmichaels 5 – Ryan Huey was 4 for 4 with a home run, double and five RBIs as the visiting Rangers topped the Mikes for the second day in a row in Section 1-A.
Matt Sieg knocked in two runs with a home run and two singles for Fort Cherry (5-1, 7-1). Winning pitcher Blake Sweder gave up two runs on three hits in five innings and also doubled, singled and knocked in a run.
Ambrose Adamson smashed a home run and a double and knocked in two runs for Carmichaels (4-2, 6-2) which also got three hits and an RBI from Aydan Adamson.
Losing pitcher Liam Lohr gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits with no walks and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.
Avella 19, Mapletown 3 – Cam Ullom had five RBIs and the Eagles exploded for 13 runs in the first inning in rolling to a four-inning Section 1-A win at Mapletown.
Isaiah Bradick had three hits for Avella (6-1, 7-1) and starting pitcher Bryce Wright doubled.
Cole Jaworoski earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
Joshua Mick had two hits for the Maples (0-5, 2-7). Spencer Yeager took the loss.
Softball
Jefferson-Morgan 19, California 4 – Karlee Crockard doubled and singled twice and Brooklynne Snyder also had three hits as the Lady Rockets soared past the host Lady Trojans in a six-inning Section 2-A softball game.
Emilee Bazolli doubled twice for J-M (3-2, 3-4). Kallyn Novak earned the win.
Losing pitcher Kera Urick doubled for California (0-7, 0-9).
Mapletown 8, Avella 0 – Devan Clark tossed a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and Makenna Lotspeich ripped a trio of doubles as the Lady Maples shut out the host Lady Eagles in a Section 2-A game.
Clark added a triple with the bat and Cora Roberts tripled as well for Mapletown (4-2, 4-4).
Avery Rodo doubled for Avella (0-6, 3-7).
Waynesburg Central 7, Brownsville 1 – Dani Stockdale had three hits and two runs scored and Gina Tedrow three a four-hitter as the Lady Raiders defeated the visiting Lady Falcons in a Section 4-AAA game.
Tedrow allowed no earned runs and struck out nine.
Aidan Snider had two RBIs and Ellie Makel scored two runs for Waynesburg (3-2, 5-6).
Ava Clark was the losing pitcher for Brownsville (2-3, 3-5).
Saturday, April 20
Washington-Greene County Track & Field Championship – Waynesburg Central’s Mason Schroyer won the silver medal in the pole vault after clearing 12 feet in the Washington-Greene County Track & Field Championship held at Peters Township.
Also earning All-County honors for Waynesburg were Rykan Gustafson (3, discus, 118-11), Jeffrey Blair (7, discus, 105-11), Chase Fox (6, 200, 24.32), Ace Litwinovich (3, 110 high hurdles, 17.43; 300 intermediate hurdles, 45.08), Zack Andrews (4, 300 intermediate hurdles, 43.62), 400 relay (46.11), 800 relay (4, 1:51.30), 1,600 relay (4, 3:55.72), 3,200 relay (6, 9:40.45), Jack Ricciuti (5, high jump, 5-10), Aidan Pester (6, pole vault, 10-0), and Duncan Barto (8, shot put, 36-2½).
Thursday, April 18
California 76, Waynesburg Central 74 – The California boys trailed Waynesburg Central when the Section 6-AA meet was suspended around 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, because of a thunderstorm during the boys 800-meter run.
The boys needed to complete the 800, 200, 3,200 and 1,600 relay, plus one more round of throws in the javelin.
The Trojans came through on the track, rallying for a slim 76-74 victory Thursday over the Raiders. California also defeated Beth-Center, 117-25.
The victories, coupled with Brownsville’s loss to Charleroi, assures California a share of the section title for the first time in nearly a decade. Waynesburg is guaranteed at least second place despite the loss.
Waynesburg’s Nate Fox was leading the 800 when the meet was called, but the tide turned in Thursday’s running of the two-lap race. Fox and California’s Niamh McClaflin and Carter Kent were bunched together, but McClaflin and Kent broke free for a 1-2 finish.
Kent crossed the finish line first in 2:04.94, with McClaflin next in 2:06.41. Both times beat the school record held by Kolby Kent. Fox was third with a time of 2:08.71.
The Raiders’ Chase Fox edged California’s Lee Qualk by one-hundredth of a second and the Trojans’ Xander Kadash by two-hundredths of a second.
Kent won the 3,200 with McClaflin second. Waynesburg’s Will Maxwell gave it his best effort of the season for third place by lowering his previous PR by 45 seconds.
Waynesburg Central (girls) 88, California 61; California 95, Beth-Center 37; Bentworth 72, Beth-Center 46 – The Section 6-AA meet suspended on April 12 was completed with the California girls splitting the triangular.
The Lady Trojans’ Reagan Gillen (28.78) was the overall first-place finisher in the 200. Bentworth’s Emily Paquet was first overall in the 3,200 with a time of 14:47.17. Waynesburg won the 1,600 relay in 5:12.51.
Softball
West Greene 5, Mapletown 4 – Melissa Tharp drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning in West Greene’s Section 2-A home win.
West Greene (4-1, 5-3) tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Mapletown regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Payton Gilbert struck out nine in the win to run her total to 203 strikeouts. She also doubled and drove in a run.
Tharp went 3-for-4 and made a couple of big catches, one leading to a double play in the top of the sixth inning. Madelyn Roberts contributed two hits, including a two-run single in the sixth inning.
Devan Clark struck out six and didn’t walk a batter in the loss.
Jefferson-Morgan 17, Avella 1 – Emilee Bazzoli struck out 10 in the Lady Rockets’ Section 2-A victory.
Bazzoli, Addalei Larkin, Ashlyn Snyder and Kayla Larkin all doubled for Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 2-4).
Taylor Shirley doubled for the Lady Eagles (0-5, 3-6).
Waynesburg Central 10, Keystone Oaks 0 – Gina Tedrow had 13 strikeouts and doubled to lead the Lady Raiders to a Section 4-AAA victory.
Mikaylynn Good belted a home run and Breanna Kerr and Ellie Makel both hit two doubles for Waynesburg (2-2, 4-6).
Baseball
Waynesburg Central 11, Brownsville 0 – Kory Taylor had two hits and three RBIs and Austin Surber threw a four-hitter as the visiting Raiders remained unbeaten with a five-inning Section 4-AAA win at Brownsville.
Alex VanSickle had three hits, including a double, and an RBI, Nick Willard added a hit and three RBIs and Derek Turcheck doubled and singled for Waynesburg (5-0, 6-0) which also got two hits and three runs from Ethan Kiger and a double from Trenton Zupper.
Surber struck out five and walked one in tossing the shutout.
Ben Vojacek and Rylan Johnson each hit a double for the Falcons (0-8, 0-8). Gene Thorpe took the loss.
Fort Cherry 15, Carmichaels 5 – Colton Temple drove in four runs with a double and two singles and Ben Demascal had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs as the host Rangers handed the Mikes their first loss of the season in a six-inning Section 1-A game.
Luke Sweder doubled twice, winning pitcher Ryan Huey and Matt Sieg both doubled and singled and Dylan Lueck also had two hits for Fort Cherry (4-1, 6-1).
The Rangers built a 6-2 lead after three innings and held a 11-5 advantage when they scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to induce the mercy rule.
Huey allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in four innings.
Liam Lohr had two hits and two RBIs for Carmichaels (4-1, 6-1).
Nathan Beringo took the loss for the Mikes who used five pitchers.
The result left Carmichaels, Fort Cherry and Avella (5-1, 6-1) all with one loss in the section.
West Greene 11, Cameron (W. Va.) 2 – Colten Thomas stole five bases to go along with two hits and two runs scored as the host Pioneers rolled past Cameron in a non-section game.
Winning pitcher Morgan Kiger had 11 strikeouts for West Greene (5-2) which has won five in a row.
Hunter Evans singled twice and drove in a run for the Dragons (15-5).
Wednesday, April 17
Mapletown 3, California 2 – Alexis Perry scored the go-ahead run on Mary Seward’s single in the bottom of the sixth inning and winning pitcher Devan Clark made the lead hold up as the Lady Maples nipped the visiting Lady Trojans in a Section 2-A softball game.
Clark struck out nine and gave up seven hits with one walk. Mckenna Lotspeich had three hits and Treslee Watson knocked in a run for Mapletown.
The Lady Maples (3-1, 3-3) were up 2-0 when California (0-6, 0-8) tied it with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Seward’s single in the bottom of the inning was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Perry to score from first base and make it 3-2.
Losing pitcher Kera Urick had three hits for the Lady Trojans.
West Greene 15, Avella 0 – Payton Gilbert was 3 for 3 with a home run and a double and drove in five runs as the Lady Pioneers romped over the visiting Lady Eagles in a four-inning Section 2-A game.
Gilbert also was the winning pitcher, tossing a one-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts.
Ali Goodwin had a hit and three RBIs and Marissa Tharp contributed a triple, single, RBI and three runs for West Greene (3-1, 4-3) which also got two hits and an RBI from both Kylee Davis and Emmaline Beazell and a double, single, RBI and three runs from Madelyn Roberts.
The Lady Pioneers broke the game open with 12 runs in the second inning.
Losing pitcher Avrey Rado had the lone hit for Avella (0-4, 3-5).
Tuesday, April 16
Carmichaels 12, California 4 – Liam Lohr homered, doubled and knocked in four runs as the undefeated Mikes topped the visiting Trojans in a Section 1-A baseball game.
Mason Lapana blasted a three-run homer for Carmichaels (4-0, 6-0) which took over sole possession of first place in the section thanks to Avella’s 14-8 win at Fort Cherry.
The Mikes also got a double and two RBIs from Aydan Adamson and two hits from Dom Colarusso. Nathan Beringo was the winning pitcher.
Niko Georgagis singled twice for California (2-4, 2-7) and Logan Hartley hit a double. Weston Monticelli took the loss.
West Greene 4, Jefferson-Morgan 1 – Darren Knight struck out 10 in throwing a complete game and Johnny Lampe doubled, singled and drove in a run as the visiting Pioneers held off the Rockets in a Section 1-A game.
Knight, who singled twice, allowed seven hits and took a shutout into the seventh.
Colten Thomas doubled and singled for West Greene (4-2, 4-2) which also got two hits from Jackson Grimes and two RBIs from Hayden Hamilton.
Deakyn DeHoet had three hits for Jefferson-Morgan (0-6, 2-6) which also got two singles apiece from Brayden Ellsworth and Brenton Barnhart.
Losing pitcher Drew Adams surrendered just one earned run on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
Mapletown 10, Frazier 0 – AJ Vanata smacked three doubles and was the winning pitcher as the Maples blanked the visiting Commodores in a five-inning, non-section game.
Jeremiah Mick, Roger Gradek and Carson Vanata also doubled for Mapletown (2-6). Vanata pitched 4 1/3 innings with Spencer Yeager recording the final two outs to complete the shutout.
Daniel Fox and Ashtin Nessleroad each knocked in two runs for the Maples.
Tyler Morrison and Brady Secrest had the only hits for Frazier (4-5). Dylan Keilbach was the losing pitcher.
Softball
Mapletown 12, Avella 10 – The host Lady Maples built a 9-0 lead and survived a Lady Eagles rally to earn a Section 2-A win.
Winning pitcher Devan Clark struck out 15 and Mapletown (2-1, 2-3) got doubles from Alexis Perry and Marly Seward.
Haleigh Rush doubled for Avella (0-3, 3-4). Avery Ado was the losing pitcher.
Track & Field
Waynesburg Central boys 124, Monessen 17; Waynesburg Central girls 128, Monessen 16 – Host Waynesburg cruised to an easy win over the Greyhounds in a Section 6-AA boys meet and the Lady Raiders also defeated the Lady Greyhounds in the girls meet.
The Lady Raiders’ 3,200 relay, Lake Litwinovich (100 high hurdles, 18.65; 300 intermediate hurdles, 52.39), Kali Shriver (100, 13.43), Reiley Shultz (1,600, 6:52.76), Rylei Rastoka (400, 1:10.60), Bella Haas (800, 3:09.59), Lelia McCollum (200, 29.36), Kaylee Ayers (3,200, 16:52.80), 1,600 relay (5:05.55), Railey Bochna (high jump, 4-10; long jump, 15-2½; triple jump, 29-10), Cheyenne Pierson (discus, 79-5; shot put, 29-6), Brynn Kirby (javelin, 101-0), and Ember Weber (pole vault, 7-0) finished first against the Lady Greyhounds.
