Jacobs scores 25 as Lady Mikes top Frazier
Carmichaels outscored host Frazier 31-16 in the second half on its way to a 53-43 victory in Section 4-AA girls basketball action Monday night.
Carmichaels goes to 3-8 in the section and 4-16 overall. The Lady Commodores slip to 2-9 in the section and 5-15 overall.
The Lady Mikes’ Ali Jacobs scored a game-high 25 points. Megan Voithofer finished with 18 points.
Frazier’s Malana Burton had a double-double with 10 rebounds and 12 points. Allie Yauch scored a team-high 19 points.
Monessen 60, Mapletown 29 — The Lady Greyhounds scored 40 points in the first half to roll to a Section 2-A home win.
Hailey Johnson (14), Madison Johnson (12), and Sidney Campbell (10) all finished in double figures for Monessen (9-0, 15-4).
Isabella Garneck scored 19 points for the Lady Maples (3-6, 6-12).
Saturday, Feb. 3
Waynesburg Central 58, California 38 — The Raiders held the Trojans to two points in the first quarter and breezed to a non-section boys basketball road victory.
Waynesburg led by 12 points after the first quarter and 15 points at halftime. The lead grew to 54-21 at the end of the third quarter.
The Raiders’ Alex Vansickle hit five 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 19 points. Austin Surber scored 12 points. Alex Eck finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Cole Headlee dished out six assists.
Hunter Brown led California with 10 points. Jayden Knox added seven points.
Women’s basketball
Allegheny 72, Waynesburg 54 – Allegheny pulled away with 30 points in the third quarter for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
Allegheny (11-5, 12-7) led 28-27 at halftime and extended its lead to 58-36 at the end of the third quarter.
Mia Henkins led Waynesburg (3-13, 4-17) with 15 points.
Allegheny’s Emily Lauer scored a game-high 24 points. Jess Bickart (14), Sarah Santicola (12), and Sofia Genareo (10) also finished in double figures.
Men’s basketball
Waynesburg 73, Allegheny 64 – Antone Baker’s 30 points led the Yellow Jackets to a Presidents’ Athletic Conference home victory.
Waynesburg (11-10, 18-8) held a 38-36 halftime lead.
Waynesburg’s Jaylen Davis had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.Jordan McLoyd finished with 17 points.
Ryan Lang (13), Luke Barker (12), and Isaiah Portis (11) finished in double figures for the Gators (3-13, 5-16).
Friday, Feb. 2
Geibel Catholic 62, Mapletown 58 – The Gators cracked the win column with an overtime victory in Section 2-A boys basketball play at Mapletown.
The Gators are 1-7 in the section and 1-19 overall. The Maples slip to 1-7 in the section and 2-15 overall.
The Gators outscored Mapletown in overtime, 6-2, led by Gary Tarbuk’s four points
Geibel opened the game with a 21-11 lead after the first quarter. The advantage grew to 36-25 at halftime.
Mapletown drew to 46-44 after three quarters and outscored the Gators in the fourth quarter, 12-10, to force overtime.
Tarbuk scored a game-high 24 points. Tommy Kolencik finished with 22 points and Mike Miller added 10.
Jeremiah Mick scored 16 points and Braden McIntire added 14 for Mapletown.
Frazier 42, Carmichaels 34 — The Commodores kept their Section 4-AA playoff hopes alive with a victory on the road at Carmichaels.
The Commodores improved to 5-5 in the section and 10-10 overall. Frazier needs to win one of its two remaining games, playing Burgettstown and Beth-Center on the road. The Commodores hold a two-game lead on Beth-Center (3-7), but lost the first game to the Bulldogs.
Frazier led 9-5 after the first quarter, but the Mikes (1-9, 4-14) rallied for a 16-16 tie at halftime. The Commodores held a 26-18 advantage in the second half.
Frazier’s Dailan McManus scored a game-high 16 points. Brock Alekson pulled down 10 rebounds.
Aydan Adamson paced Carmichaels with 11 points.
Washington 72, Waynesburg Central 28 — The Prexies rolled to a Section 4-AAA victory over the Raiders.
Cole Headlee and Dane Woods scored seven points each for Waynesburg (2-8, 6-13).
Ruben Gordon led the way for Washington (9-1, 12-7) with a game-high 21 points. De’Ondre Daugherty finished with 13 points and Zxavian Willis added 11.
California 51, Jefferson-Morgan 47 — The Trojans’ rally in the fourth quarter produced Section 2-A home victory over the Rockets.
Jefferson-Morgan (4-4, 12-8) led 15-9 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime. California sliced into the deficit and trailed 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans (5-3, 6-13) outscored the visitors in the final eight minutes, 21-8, for the come-from-behind win.
Vinny Manzella scored a game-high 18 points for California. Jacob Ziolecki finished with 18 points.
John Woodward Jr. paced Jefferson-Morgan with 12 points and Houston Guesman added 11.
Girls basketball
Charleroi 69, West Greene 46 — The Lady Cougars’ McKenna DeUnger entered the 2023-24 season four points shy of 1,000 career points, but an injury suffered at the end of soccer season led her to miss her final basketball season.
DeUnger managed to score the four points she needed in Charleroi’s non-section win at West Greene.
Charleroi led 28-15 at the end of the first quarter and 46-26 at halftime.
Bella Carroto paced the Lady Cougars with a game-high 21 points. Ella Sypolt finished with 17 points and Riley Jones added 12.
Kendra Tharp scored 16 and Madelyn Roberts finished with nine for West Greene.
Thursday, Feb. 1
Waynesburg Central 49, Yough 19 – The Lady Raiders kept their grip on first place in Section 4-AAA by overcoming a slow start to defeat the visiting Lady Cougars in girls basketball action.
Waynesburg (8-0, 18-1), which sports the best overall record among WPIAL Class AAA teams, needs one more win or one more loss by second-place South Park to clinch at least a share of its third consecutive section championship.
Avery Davis led the Lady Raiders with 15 points and Kaley Rohanna followed with nine points.
Yough held a 7-6 lead after the first quarter but Waynesburg took control by outscoring the visitors 13-2 in the second for a 19-9 halftime advantage and pulled away from there.
Autumn Matthews led the Lady Cougars (1-7, 8-11) with 10 points.
Geibel Catholic 43, Mapletown 27 – Emma Larkin scored a game-high 21 points and Ava Henderson sank five 3-pointers in an 19-point performance as the visiting Lady Gators triumphed at Mapletown in a Section 2-A game.
The Lady Maples (3-5, 6-11) charged out to a 16-8 advantage in the first quarter but Geibel (6-2, 13-6) answered with an 18-2 edge in the second quarter to take a 26-18 halftime lead, then outscored the hosts 9-0 in the third quarter to put the game away.
Helena Cumpston had eight points for Mapletown, which also got 11 rebounds apiece from Emma Zalar and Isabella Garnek.
Monessen 45, West Greene 39 – The first-place Lady Greyhounds rallied in the fourth quarter to fight off the host Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A battle.
Sidney Campbell and Hailey Johnson each scored 13 points for Monessen (8-0, 14-3) which trailed 32-29 after three quarters before overtaking West Greene with a 16-7 advantage in the final frame.
Kendra Tharp was the top scorer for West Greene (4-4, 7-12) with 12 points and Eryka Hackney contributed nine points.
Avella 40, Jefferson-Morgan 39 – Sydney Strope hit the winning basket with a short jump shot just before the final buzzer and Ava Frank scored 14 points as the Lady Eagles (2-6, 4-15) nipped the host Lady Rockets in a Section 2-A clash.
The game was tight throughout. J-M led 12-11 after one quarter, the score was tied 24-24 at halftime and the Lady Rockets held a 31-29 advantage after three quarters.
Kayla Larkin tallied a game-high 18 points in defeat for Jefferson-Morgan (1-7, 3-16).
Washington 32, Carmichaels 23 – Olivia Woods and Kaprice Johnson both had nine points as the Lady Prexies (9-1, 11-8) fended off the host Lady Mikes in a Section 4-AA game.
Megan Voithofer tallied a game-high 15 points for Carmichaels (2-8, 3-16).
Wednesday, Jan. 31
Waynesburg Central 48, West Greene 37 – Alex Vansickle scored 16 points as the Raiders earned a non-section boys basketball win over the visiting Pioneers.
Dane Woods grabbed seven rebounds and Cole Headlee had four assists for Waynesburg (6-12).
Lane Allison tied for game-high honors with 16 points for West Greene (11-6), which also got 14 points from Parker Burns.
Women’s basketball
Geneva 77, Waynesburg 52 – Geneva pulled away with a 22-5 run in the first half and went on to defeat visiting Waynesburg in a PAC game.
Kayla Howard led Waynesburg (3-12, 4-16) in scoring with nine points.
Tuesday, Jan. 30
California 77, Mapletown 66 – Vinny Manzella and Noah Neil led California to a boys basketball victory against Mapletown to clinch a Section 2-A playoff berth.
The Trojans improve to 4-3 in the section and 5-13 overall. Mapletown slides to 1-6 in the section and 2-14 overall.
Manzella scored 21, including four 3-pointers, of his game-high 31 points in the Trojans’ 24-point second quarter.
Neil picked up the offense in the third quarter with 16 of his 20 points in the quarter. California scored 20 points in the quarter.
The Maples’ Braden McIntire scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Roger Gradek finished with 20 points.
Monessen 58, Jefferson-Morgan 55 – The Greyhounds held on for a Section 2-A road victory against the Rockets.
Monessen (14-3) maintained a share of the top spot in the section with a 6-1 record. Jefferson-Morgan slips to 4-3 in the section and 12-7 overall.
The Greyhounds led 15-12 after the first quarter and 28-27 at halftime. The lead grew to 48-42 after three quarters.
The Rockets’ rally fell short in the final eight minutes with a 13-10 advantage.
Monessen’s Lorenzo Gardner poured in a game-high 30 points. Timothy Kershaw finished with 12 points.
Jase Bedillion (15), Dayten Marion (12), Houston Guesman (11), and John Woodward Jr. (10) all scored in double figures for the Rockets.
West Greene 70, Geibel Catholic 53 – The Pioneers kept pace with Monessen in the Section 2-A standings with a road win over the Gators.
West Greene improves to 6-1 in the section and 11-6 overall. Geibel falls to 0-7 in the section and 0-19 overall.
West Greene trailed after the first quarter, 10-8, but rallied for a 33-24 halftime lead. The advantage grew to 52-46 after three quarters.
The Pioneers’ Lane Allison (25) and Parker Burns (22) combined for 47 points.
Gary Tarbuk led the Gators with 22 points. Evan Jellots finished with 14 points.
Carmichaels 47, Bentworth 37 – The Mikes returned home with their first Section 4-AA victory.
Carmichaels is 1-8 in the section and 4-13 overall. The Bearcats slips to 2-8 in the section and 3-14 overall.
Dom Colarusso scored 17 points for Carmichaels. Bentworth’s Ben Hays finished with a game-high 19 points.
Rifle
Waynesburg Central 792-50x, Upper St. Clair 783-35x – The Raiders downed the Panthers for a Section 1 home victory at Waynesburg Ãå±±½ûµØman’s Club.
Waynesburg’s Abbi King, Faithlyn Vukmanic and Emma Lawson shared medalist honors with a score of 100-8x. Logan Crouse (99-7x), Wyatt Franklin (98-5x), Joe Withrow (98-6x), Aylah Ford (98-4x), and Corbin Flanagan (99-4x) rounded out the scoring.
Ben Weldron scored 100-6x and Erin Shehab finished with 100-3x for Upper St. Clair.
