Local roundup: Lady Raiders cap regular season with win at California
Waynesburg Central closed the regular season with a 67-38 non-section win at California in a girls basketball clash between two WPIAL playoff teams Monday night.
Waynesburg (20-2) led 39-28 at halftime and salted the game away with a 28-10 advantage in the second half.
Kaley Rohanna led the way for the Lady Raiders with a game-high 28 points. Avery Davis finished with 13 points and Josie Horne grabbed 13 rebounds.
Rakiyah Porter scored 18 points for the Lady Trojans (10-12).
Friday, Feb. 9
McGuffey 64, Waynesburg Central 36 – Grayson Wallace had 26 points as the fourth-place Highlanders cruised past the visiting Raiders in a Section 4-AAA boys basketball game.
Aydan Cunningham had 16 points for McGuffey (5-7, 14-8).
Austin Surber Waynesburg (2-10, 7-15) with nine points and Alex Eck grabbed 10 rebounds.
Chartiers-Houston 58, Carmichaels 34 – The visiting Bucs outscored the Mikes 31-11 in the middle two quarters on their way to a Section 4-AA victory.
Justin Buckingham tossed in 21 points for Chartiers-Houston (9-3, 16-6) which pulled into a second-place tie with Burgettstown.
Dominic Colarusso led Carmichaels (1-11, 4-17) with 10 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 80, Geibel Catholic 41 – Houston Guesman led the fourth-place Rockets with 16 points in a Section 2-A victory over the visiting Gators.
Dayten Marion added 14 points for J-M (5-5, 13-9) and was followed by Jase Bedilion (12) and Collin Bisceglia (10).
Tommy Kolencik paced Geibel (1-9, 1-21) with 15 points and Gary Tarbuk contributed 14.
West Greene 47, Mapletown 44 – The second-place Pioneers fended off the host Maples in a Section 2-A clash.
Lane Allison led all scorers with 18 points for West Greene (8-2, 14-7) which also got 10 points from Parker Burns.
Braden McIntire and AJ Vanata topped Mapletown (1-9, 2-18) with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Girls basketball
Chartiers-Houston 54, Carmichaels 22 – Ava Capozzoli tallied 19 points as the Lady Bucs triumphed over the host Lady Mikes in a Section 4-AA game.
Amelia Brose added 14 points for C-H (11-1, 16-5).
Megan Voithofer led the way for Carmichaels (3-9, 4-17) with eight points.
West Greene 59, Mapletown 35 – Kasie Meek led a balanced attack with 14 points as the Lady Pioneers beat the host Lady Maples in a meeting of Section 2-A playoff teams.
Madelynn Roberts followed with 13 points and Kendra Tharp had 12 for West Greene (6-4, 9-13).
Isabella Garnek rang up a game-high 20 points for Mapletown (3-7, 6-14).
Thursday, Feb. 8
Waynesburg Central 47, Brownsville 43 – The visiting Lady Raiders clinched a share of the Section 4-AAA title with a win at Brownsville in girls basketball action.
Waynesburg closes section play with a 9-1 record and improves to 19-2 overall. Brownsville finishes regular season play with a 5-5 record and overall mark of 13-8.
Kaley Rohanna led the Lady Raiders with 19 points. Addison Blair finished with 11 points.
Brownsville’s Skyler Gates scored a game-high 29 points. Zhariah Reed contributed 10 points and Ava Clark rounded out the scoring with four points.
Geibel Catholic 49, Jefferson-Morgan 25 – Ava Henderson led the way for the visiting Lady Gators for a Section 2-A road victory.
The Lady Gators finish section play with an 8-2 record and overall mark of 15-6. Geibel hosts Frazier Monday night in the regular season finale.
Henderson scored a game-high 18 points. Emmar Larkin finished with 15 points and Ava Patridge added 14.
Kayla Larkin and Ali Ostrich both scored six points for the Lady Rockets (1-9, 3-19).
Wednesday, Feb. 7
Bentworth 62, Mapletown 41 – Bentworth built a 13-point lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back for a 62-41 non-section girls basketball win against visiting Mapletown.
The Lady Bearcats (5-17) led 22-9 after the first quarter and 37-23 at halftime.
Bentworth’s Amber Sallee made five 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 23 points. She also had seven assists.
Teammate Ava Massucci made four 3-pointers for 16 points. Gianna Brown pulled down 10 rebounds.
Isabella Garnek scored a game-high 26 points for Mapletown (6-13).
Uniontown 53, Carmichaels 32 – The Lady Raiders scored 33 points in the first half for a non-section victory over visiting Carmichaels.
Uniontown led 21-10, 33-16 and 43-27 at the quarter breaks.
The Lady Raiders’ A’Kira Dade scored a game-high 22 points. Lyric McLee finished with 13 points and Geelece Ingram added 12.
The Lady Mikes’ Alayna Simon scored nine points.
Hundred (W.Va.) 40, Jefferson-Morgan 36 – The Lady Rockets dropped a non-section game to Hundred.
Kayla Larkin scored 17 points for Jefferson-Morgan (3-18). Hundred’s Leah Dean finished with a game-high 21 points.
Boys basketball
West Greene 49, Carmichaels 33 – The Mikes fell behind early and were not able to rally in a non-section home loss to visiting West Greene.
Lane Allison scored a game-high 27 points and Parker Burns added 10 for the Pioneers.
Aydan Adamson led Carmichaels with 15 points. Dom Colarusso finished with 10 points.
Bentworth 73, Mapletown 57 – Chris Harper, Ryan Moessner, Lucas Burt and Ben Hays combined for 64 points to lead the Bearcats to a non-section home win.
Harper scored a game-high 25 points for Bentworth (4-16). Moessner finished with 15 points, Burt contributed 13 points and Hays added 10.
Josh Mick led the Maples (2-17) with 16 points. Braden McIntire scored 15 and Roger Gradek added 12.
Tuesday, Feb. 6
Fort Cherry 72, Carmichaels 35 – The Rangers scored 31 points in the third quarter and held the Mikes scoreless in the fourth quarter for a Section 4-AA boys basketball home win.
Aydan Adamson led Carmichaels (1-10, 4-15) with 20 points. Robbie Wilson-Jones added 10 points.
Derek Errett paced Fort Cherry (10-1, 15-5) with a game-high 24 points. Blake Sweder finished with 19 points.
Mount Pleasant 63, Waynesburg Central 54 – The Vikings scored 32 points in the fourth quarter to secure a Section 4-AAA road win.
Waynesburg (2-9, 7-14) led 10-5 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. The lead grew to 36-31 after three quarters.
Connor Pavlochak finished with a game-high 10 points for Mount Pleasant (7-3, 8-11). Chase McCloy added 18 points.
Cole Headlee (15), Alex Eck (14), and Alex Vansickle (10) all scored in double figures for the Raiders. Dane Woods pulled down 10 rebounds.
Monessen 59, Mapletown 48 – The Greyhounds were tough at home for a Section 2-A victory over the visiting Maples.
Monessen (8-1, 16-3) clinched at least a share of the section title. Mapletown slips to 1-8 in the section and 2-16 overall.
Lorenzo Gardner paced Monessen with a game-high 21 points. Tyvaughn Kershaw finished with 14 points.
Mapletown’s AJ Vanata scored 15 points. Jeremiah Mick finished with 12 points and Josh Mick added 10.
West Greene 38, Jefferson-Morgan 30 – The Pioneers kept their hopes for a share of the Section 2-A title with a win over the visiting Rockets.
West Greene improves to 7-2 in the section and 12-9 overall. Jefferson-Morgan goes to 4-5 in the section and 12-9 overall.
Lane Allison scored 14 points for the Pioneers.
California 72, Geibel Catholic 46 – The Trojans returned home with a Section 2-A victory over the Gators.
California (6-3, 7-14) clinched third place with the win. The Gators slip to 1-8 in the section and 1-20 overall.
The Trojans led 45-23 at halftime.
California’s Vinny Manzella made five 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 23 points. Noah Neil scored 16, and Jaquese Derns and Jacob Ziolecki both finished with 10 points.
Tommy Kolencik and Gary Tarbuk shared team-scoring honors for the Gators with 18 points apiece.
Girls basketball
West Greene 45, Jefferson-Morgan 32 – The Lady Pioneers pulled away in the third quarter with 23 points for a Section 2-A home win.
Kendra Tharp led West Greene (5-4, 8-13) with 13 points. Kayla Larkin scored a game-high 14 points for the Lady Rockets (1-8, 3-17).
