Local roundup: Lady Pioneers open WPIAL playoffs with 55-33 win

The West Greene girls led 17-3 after the first quarter Monday night and the Lady Pioneers didn’t slow down for a 55-33 home victory over Jeannette in the first round of the WPIAL Class A basketball playoffs.

West Greene (10-13) advanced to play at top-seeded Union Thursday night.

The win over the Lady Jayhawks guaranteed at least two more games for the Lady Pioneers with the second coming either in the semifinals or the consolation bracket.

The Lady Pioneers increased their lead to 27-11 at halftime and 42-21 after three quarters.

Kendra Tharp paced a balanced West Greene attack with 13 points. Madelyn Roberts scored 12 and Kasie Meek added 11.

Adrianna Allison led Jeannette (8-10) with a game-high 25 points.

Bishop Canevin 53, Mapletown 17 – The Lady Crusaders pulled away in the third quarter for a victory over the visiting Lady Maples in the first round of the WPIAL Class A basketball playoffs.

Bishop Canevin (7-13) was scheduled to play third-seeded Saint Joseph Thursday in the quarterfinals.

The Lady Crusaders led 22-10 at halftime and doubled their point total in the third quarter with a 22-1 advantage.

Isabella Garnek led Mapletown (6-15) with 10 points.

Bishop Canevin’s Amari Elliott scored a game-high 17 points. Isabella Sysak finished with 13 points.

Boys wrestling

WPIAL AA Individual South Sectional – Frazier’s Ryan Celaschi won a 1-0 decision over Jefferson-Morgan’s Chase Frameli in the 160-pound championship in the tournament held at Burgettstown.

The Commodores’ Rune Lawrence pinned West Greene’s Colin Whyte in 25 seconds for a victory in the 215-pound final.

The top six wrestlers from each sectional advance to the WPIAL championship.

West Greene’s Noah Collins (114) and Seth Burns (133), and Jefferson-Morgan’s Adam McAnany (215) won their third-place consolation bouts.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Mason Sisler (285) finished fourth while the Rockets’ James Dulaney (121), Grant Hathway (152), and Brock Bayles (189) won their fifth-place consolation bouts.

West Greene’s Levi Yeater (145) placed sixth.

Women’s basketball

Waynesburg 91, Thiel 53 – The Yellow Jackets scored 20 or more points in each quarter for a victory in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference finale.

Waynesburg closes with a 5-15 conference record and overall mark of 6-19. The Tomcats slide to 0-20 in the PAC and 0-25 overall.

The Yellow Jackets’ Annika Dansby scored a game-high 22 points. Marley Wolf finished with 15 points.

Maddy Triskett finished with 12 points, and Kelsey Seddon and Lexy Wagner both scored 10.

Penn State DuBois 60, Penn State Fayette 59, OT – Penn State Fayette forced overtime and the home team won the extra period for a PSUAC victory.

Penn State Fayette led 28-26 at halftime, but lost the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 43-42.

Carmichaels graduate Sophia Zalar scored 11 and Heaven Crumm added 10 for Penn State Fayette. Abby Bickerton grabbed 13 rebounds.

Rebecca Martin scored a game-high 17 points. Natalie Bowser had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Frances Milliron also scored 12 points and Tara Learner pulled down 14 rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Waynesburg 69, Thiel 58 – The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half for a season-ending home victory in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.

Waynesburg finishes 11-9 in the PAC and 14-11 overall. The Tomcats slip to 7-12 in the conference and 8-17 overall.

Antone Baker paced the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 20 points. Jaylen Davis scored 18 points and Bryson Wilt added 10.

Elijah Harden and Ethan Barnes both scored 16 points for Thiel.

Friday, Feb. 16

Carlynton 55, Jefferson-Morgan 41 – The sixth-seeded Cougars broke open a tie game with a 17-7 advantage in the second quarter and pulled away from there for a WPIAL Class A first-round playoff win over the visiting Rockets.

Jake Moldovan led Carlynton (8-14) with 19 points. Jaydin McKnight and Lekhi Turner chipped in with 12 points apiece.

Jase Bediliion topped No. 11 Jefferson-Morgan (13-10) in scoring with 17 points.

Wednesday, Feb. 14

Penn State Beaver 77, Penn State Fayette 55 – Penn State Beaver held a 22-point halftime lead and made the advantage stand for a PSUAC women’s basketball road victory.

The teams played to a 40-40 tie in the second half.

Carmichaels graduate Sophia Zalar led the way for Penn State Fayette with 21 points. Stephanie Taylor finished with 10.

Penn State Beaver’s Claudia Siegfried scored a game-high 26 points. Emery Black and Taylor Woodruff both finished with 13 points.

Waynesburg 88, Franciscan 47 – The Yellow Jackets were tough from 3-point range, converting 18-of-27 attempts in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.

Waynesburg improves to 4-15 in the conference and 5-19 overall.

The Yellow Jackets’ Kara McFadden made all five of her 3-point attempts to finish with 15 points. Mia Henkins scored 15 points on five 3-point goals. Julz Mohrbacher scored 10 points.

Clara-Paige Miller, Aubrey Burns and Marley Wolf all made two 3-pointers.

Maria McCallen scored 14 points and Sophie Rose finished with 11 for Franciscan (2-17, 4-20)

Men’s basketball

Waynesburg 84, Franciscan 80 – The Yellow Jackets held on for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road.

Waynesburg (10-9, 13-11) led 43-37 at halftime. The Barons (5-14, 8-15) held a 43-41 advantage in the second half.

The Yellow Jackets’ Jaylen Davis had a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Davis made 11-of-15 foul shot attempts. Antone Baker and Korey Mitchum both scored 19 points.

Franciscan’s Sawyer Butler scored a game-high 26 points. Josh Zimmerman (14), Joseph Ciola (12), Frank Bellissimo (12), and Karl Yonkeu (10) also scored in double digits.
