Lady Maples fall; Pioneers win Bentworth tournament
Jeannette scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to rally past host Mapletown, 40-33, at the Mapletown Christmas Classic in girls basketball action on Friday, Dec. 29.
The Lady Maples (3-6) led 8-7 after the first quarter and 21-10 at halftime. Jeannette trailed 26-18 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mapletown’s Isabella Garnek finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Makenna Lotspeich had five rebounds and four steals.
Adriana Allison and Venicia Vignoli both scored 13 points for Jeannette.
Boys basketball
Wheeling Central 75, Waynesburg Central 32 – The Raiders were unable to overcome a 21-point deficit in the first quarter in a loss to Wheeling Central.
Cole Headlee scored six points for Waynesburg. Wheeling Central’s Eli Dean finished with a game-high 21 points.
Thursday, Dec. 28
West Greene 49, Brownsville 39 – The Pioneers broke a drought of over two decades without winning a tournament title by defeating the Falcons in the championship game of the Bentworth Holiday Hoops Classic.
Tournament MVP Lane Allison rang up a game-high 20 points and Patrick Durbin, who was also named to the All-Tournament team, chipped in with 10 for West Greene (5-4).
Coach Jim Romanus’ Pioneers built a 24-9 halftime lead and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Trent Wible and Harlan Davis were selected to the All-Tournament team for Brownsville (5-5).
Wednesday, Dec. 27
West Greene 46, Bentworth 45 – The Pioneers outscored the host Bearcats 5-4 in overtime to earn the win at the Bentworth Christmas Tournament.
Parker Burns scored 14 points for West Greene (4-4) which also got 13 points from Lane Allison and 10 from Matt Wassil.
The loss spoiled a game-high 29-point effort by Bentworth’s Ben Hays.
The Pioneers led 19-14 at halftime but the Bearcats (1-6) pulled even at 29-29 after three quarters and the score remained deadlocked at 41-41 at the end of regulation.
Girls basketball
Waynesburg Central 42, Winter Park (Fla.) 29 – The undefeated Waynesburg Central girls started slow, but picked up the tempo for a 13-point win over host Winter Park (Fla.) in the KSA Tournament.
The Lady Raiders (8-0) led 8-6 after the first quarter and padded their lead to 24-13 at halftime. Waynesburg held an 18-16 advantage in the second half.
Kaley Rohanna paced Waynesburg with a game-high 15 points. Peyton Cowell had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Maliyah Lockhart led Winter Park (10-3) with eight points. Tyler Seay finished with seven points.
