Local roundup: First-place Lady Raiders hold off Brownsville, 49-41

Kaley Rohanna tossed in 17 points as first-place Waynesburg Central hung on for a 49-41 win over visiting Brownsville in Section 4-AAA girls basketball action on Monday night..

Waynesburg (5-0, 14-1) led 11-3, 21-17 and 35-23 at the quarter breaks.

Josie Horne scored 12 points for the Lady Raiders who also got six points and 10 rebounds from Peyton Cowell.

Ava Clark tallied a game-high 19 points for the Lady Falcons (1-2, 8-6) and Skyler Gates chipped in with 10 points.

Chartiers-Houston 50, Carmichaels 16 – The Lady Bucs took a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised home from there for a Section 4-AA win over the visiting Lady Mikes.

Amelia Brose had 13 points and Ella Richey contributed 12 points for first-place Chartiers-Houston (6-0, 10-4).

Ali Jacbos and Duski Staggers scored four points apiece for Carmichaels (1-4, 2-11).

Saturday, Jan. 13

Eden Christian Academy 50, West Greene 27 – The Lady Pioneers fell behind early and were not able to rally in a non-section loss to Eden Christian Academy.

Kasey Meek led West Greene (3-8) with 13 points.

Hope Haring scored a game-high 21 points for Eden Christian Academy (8-6). Emmie Smith added 12.

Women’s basketball

Waynesburg 99, Thiel 81 – The Yellow Jackets nearly reached the century mark for a PAC road victory.

The point total was the fourth-most in program history.

Kalista Friday led Waynesburg (2-8, 3-11) with 16 points. Mia Henkins scored 15 points. Marley Wolf finished with 14 points.

Men’s basketball

Thiel 72, Waynesburg 64 – The Tomcats were tough at home for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Yellow Jackets.

Scott Bilovus led Waynesburg (4-6, 7-8) with 15 points. Antone Baker finished with 13 points and Jansen Knotts added 10.

Burgettstown Wrestling Tournament – Jefferson-Morgan’s Chase Frameli was the 160-pound silver medalist at the Burgettstown tourney.

Teammate Brock Bayles placed fifth at 189 pounds. Levi Heath made the 215-pound medals stand in sixth place, as did Mason Sisler at 285 pounds.

Friday, Jan. 12

Mount Pleasant 70, Waynesburg Central 53 – The Vikings secured the Section 4-AAA home win with a 24-11 advantage in the fourth quarter over the Raiders in a boys basketball clash.

Mount Pleasant (4-1, 5-8) led 32-30 at halftime and 46-42 after three quarters.

Connor Pavlocak led the way for the Vikings with a game-high 28 points. Dante Giallonardo scored 17 and Chase McCloy added 11.

Dane Woods scored a team-high 17 points for the Raiders (0-5, 2-10). Alex Vansickle and Austin Surber both finished with 11 points. Alex Eck grabbed 13 rebounds and Cole Headlee dished out five assists.

Fort Cherry 68, Carmichaels 35 – The Rangers led by 20 points after the first quarter and rolled to a Section 4-AA road victory.

Aydan Cunningham scored a game-high 17 points for the Mikes (0-5, 3-10).

Derek Errett finished with 13 points and Blake Sweder added 11 for Fort Cherry (4-0, 8-4).

Monessen 80, Mapletown 36 – The Greyhounds scored 49 points in the middle two quarters on their way to a Section 2-A road win.

The Maples led 15-12 after the first quarter. Monessen rallied into the lead at halftime, 39-17, and extended the advantage to 61-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Lorenzo Gardner scored a game-high 24 points for the Greyhounds. Timothy Kershaw added 14.

Roger Gradek finished with 11 points and Josh Mick added eight for Mapletown.

Thursday, Jan. 11

Waynesburg Central 48, South Park 36 – Addison Blair scored a game-high 13 points as the Lady Raiders rode a balanced attack in rallying for a key Section 4-AAA girls basketball victory at South Park.

The win gives Waynesburg (4-0, 13-1) sole possession of first place while knocking the Lady Eagles (3-1, 7-4) into second.

Kaley Rohanna, Josie Horne and Avery Davis added nine points apiece for the Lady Raiders.

Addy Kerr and Brook Paylo both had 10 points for South Park, which led 13-8 after the first quarter and 21-13 at halftime.

Waynesburg erased that deficit by outsourcing the hosts 20-7 in the third quarter to take a 33-28 lead and pulled away from there.

Frazier 46, Carmichaels 30 – Allie Yauch tossed in a game-high 18 points to help the Lady Commodores down the host Lady Mikes in a Section 4-AA game.

Gabby McGavitt followed with 12 points for Frazier (2-3, 5-7) and Malana Burton chipped in with 10 points.

The Lady Commodores led 12-5, 24-11 and 36-17 at the quarter breaks.

Megan Voithofer topped Carmichaels (1-3, 2-10) in scoring with nine points.

Monessen 57, Mapletown 32 – The first-place Lady Greyhounds built a 40-28 advantage then outscored the host Lady Maples 17-4 in the final quarter to earn a Section 2-A victory.

Hailey Johnson scored a game-high 13 points for Monessen (3-0, 6-2) and was followed by Madison Johnson (12) and Na’Jaziah Carter (11).

Isabella Garnek and McKenna Lotspeich tallied 12 points apiece for Mapletown (2-2, 5-8) which also got 10 rebounds from Emma Zalar.

West Greene 52, Jefferson-Morgan 39 – The Lady Pioneers took a 33-19 halftime lead and held on from there for a Section 2-A win over the visiting Lady Rockets.

Kasie Meek led West Greene (2-1, 3-7) with 12 points and Kylee Davis added 10.

Kayla Larkin poured in a game-high 20 points for J-M (0-3, 2-11) and Ava Wood contributed 10 points.

Wednesday, Jan. 10

Jefferson-Morgan 63, Washington 6 – The Prexies won the first bout of the Section 1-AA road wrestling match, and then the Rockets ran off the next 11 for the victory.

There was no bout at 107 pounds.

Johnny Gilbert (145), Brenton Barnhart (152), and Brock Bayles (189) won by fall, and Mason Sisler won a decision at 285 pounds.

Chase Frameli (160), Grant Hathaway (172), Adam McAnany (215), Carson Sweeney (114), James Dulaney (121), Brandon Remington (127), and Ronin Kramer (133) received forfeits.

Boys basketball

Mapletown 70, Geibel Catholic 66 – The Maples outscored the host Gators 21-15 in the fourth quarter to pull out the Section 2-A victory.

Roger Gradek led the way for Mapletown (1-2, 2-8) with 17 points and Lucas Stevenson added 13.

Geibel (0-3, 0-12) led 30-26 at halftime and 51-49 after three quarters.

Tommy Kolencik paced the Gators with a game-high 20 points and Gary Tarbuk followed with 12.

Tuesday, Jan. 9

Frazier 64, Carmichaels 57 – The Frazier boys carried the play in overtime for a 64-57 boys basketball victory over visiting Carmichaels in Section 4-AA action.

The Commodores (3-1, 8-5) outscored the Mikes in the overtime period, 12-5.

Carmichaels (0-4, 3-9) forced overtime with a 14-8 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Frazier led 30-26 at halftime and 44-38 after three quarters.

Dalian McManus paced Frazier with 16 points. Darian Bateman had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, as did Brennen Stewart with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Robbie Wilson-Jones led the Mikes with a game-high 19 points. Aydan Adamson scored 15 points and Dom Colarusso added 13.

Washington 69, Waynesburg Central 46 – The Raiders fell behind early and were not able to rally in Section 4-AAA home loss.

The Prexies (5-0, 8-5) led 22-12 at the end of the first quarter and held a 35-20 halftime lead.

Dane Woods scored 16 points for Waynesburg (0-4, 2-9). Jackson Dean finished with 10 points. Alex Eck pulled down 10 rebounds and Cole Headlee dished out five assists.

Washington’s Zxavian Willis scored a game-high 19 points. De’Ondre Daugherty finished with 12 points and Ruben Gordon added 10.

Jefferson-Morgan 54, California 47 – The Rockets used a 14-2 run in the third quarter to rally for a Section 2-A home victory.

The Trojans (2-1, 2-10) led 24-22 at halftime and increased the advantage to 31-24. Jefferson-Morgan led 40-33 at the end of the quarter after the run.

Dayten Marion scored a game-high 23 points for Jefferson-Morgan (2-1, 9-4). John Woodward Jr. scored 13.

Vinny Manzella led California with 19 points. Noah Neil finished with 18 points.
