Local roundup: Lady Mikes blank J-M, earn share of section title

Bailey Barnyak allowed only one hit, a double by Ashlynn Sndyer, as Carmichaels blanked host Jefferson-Morgan, 10-0, on Monday to earn a share of the Section 2-A championship with Chartiers-Houston.

Carys McConnell powered the offense for Carmichaels (11-1, 15-2) with two home runs and five RBI. Barnyak also had a strong game at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Megan Voithofer added a double.

The Lady Rockets (6-8) finish with a 6-6 section record.

West Greene 16, Avella 1 — The Lady Pioneers pounded out 19 hits in a Section 2-A road victory over Avella.

Kylee Davis and Madelyn Roberts both finished with three hits and three RBI for West Greene (8-4, 10-5). Kendra Tharp had a pair of doubles, scored three runs and drove in a pair. Emmaline Beazell had three RBI. Marissa Tharp and Payton Gilbert tripled, and Gilbert drove in two runs and scored twice.

Losing pitcher Avrey Rado had two hits and drove in the Lady Eagles’ only run.

Baseball

Waynesburg Central 10, McGuffey 2 — The Raiders rolled to a Section 4-AAA victory over the visiting Highlanders to break a three-game losing streak.

Trenton Zupper earned the victory for Waynesburg (9-2, 14-3) with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed two runs on two hits. Zupper went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, and scored two runs.

The Raiders’ Alex VanSickle finished with three doubles, a single, four RBI and four runs scored. Derek Turcheck had a double, single and two RBI. Ethan Kiger finished with two singles and three RBI.

Carmichaels 21, Mapletown 3 — The visiting Mikes put the game away with 11 runs in the top of the third inning for a Section 1-A road victory.

Robbie Wilson-Jones and Colin Andrews both drove in three runs for Carmichaels (7-4, 11-4). Mason Lapana scored three runs and drove in a pair. Nathan Beringo had two RBI and scored two runs. Aydan Adamson finished with two RBI.

AJ Vanata smacked a three-run home run for the Maples (0-11, 2-13).

Fort Cherry 9, Jefferson-Morgan 1 — Matt Sieg and Colton Temple both drove in three runs in the Rangers’ Section 1-A road victory.

Sieg and winning pitcher Ryan Huey had three hits apiece for Fort Cherry (9-2, 11-3).

Grant Hathaway drove in the only run for the Rockets (4-7, 7-9).

California 2, West Greene 1 — The Trojans upended visiting West Greene for a Section 1-A victory.

California improves to 4-7 in the section and 5-12 overall. The Pioneers go to 7-4 in the section and 11-5 overall.

Thursday, May 2

Trinity 5, Waynesburg Central 4 — Cam Schofield’s walk-off single led Trinity to a non-section baseball victory over Waynesburg.

The Raiders scored the game’s first run before the Hillers plated three in the bottom of the first inning for a 3-1 lead.

Waynesburg scored three in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 advantage before Trinity tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Wednesday, May 1

Mount Pleasant 6, Waynesburg Central 1 – Connor Drzal pitched a four-hitter and Mount Pleasant took over first place in Section 4-AAA with a victory over visiting Waynesburg Central to complete a two-game sweep while handing the Raiders their first two baseball losses of the season.

Drzal also had a double and two RBIs, Cole Chatfield added a double, single and an RBI and Sonny Marne also doubled and singled for the Vikings (9-1, 11-4) who also got a double from Dane Firmstone.

Grant Pack had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for the Raiders (8-2, 11-2). Trenton Zupper was the losing pitcher.

Washington 6, Jefferson-Morgan 5 – Var Chandler’s run-scoring triple ignited a four-run sixth inning as the visiting Prexies rallied from a 5-2 deficit to beat the host Rockets in a non-section game.

Joe Wilson triples and Isaac Charnik doubled for Washington (7-8). Chandler was the winning pitcher.

Brayden Ellsworth had three hits and three RBIs for Jefferson-Morgan (6-7) which also got doubles from Jaymison Robinson and Deakyn Dehoet.

Softball

West Greene 16, California 2 – Kendra Tharp had a triple, single, three RBIs and three runs scored in the Lady Pioneers’ Section 2-A win at Penn West-California University’s Lilley Field.

Ella Scott contributed a double, single and four RBIs, Payton Gilbert knocked in three runs with a trio of singles, and Kylee Davis also had three hits for West Greene (7-4, 9-6) which also got a triple and three RBIs from Marissa Tharp.

Winning pitcher Samamtha Zimmerman struck out four while pitching three scoreless innings without allowing a hit or walk in relief of starter Gilbert, who gave up one earned run in two innings.

Kera Urick took the loss for the Lady Trojans (1-11, 1-13).

Chartiers-Houston 11, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — Seven different players drove in at least one run as the Lady Bucs clinched at least a share of the Section 2-A title by blanking the visiting Lady Rockets.

Chartiers-Houston led 4-0 before scoring seven times in the bottom of the fourth. Taryne Drilak hit a solo home run, Seanna Riggle added a triple, and Zaylee Fonner and Lauren Rush each had a double.

Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri struck out 10 over four innings.

Emilee Bazzoli had both of J-M’s hits.

Carmichaels 7, Mapletown 0 — Carys McConnell homered and tripled, and Bailey Barnyak pitched a one-hitter as Carmichaels defeated visiting Mapletown in Section 2-A game.

Barnyak, who also doubled, struck out 14 and walked one.

Megan Voithofer had two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Mikes (8-1, 11-2) who also got two hits from Ali Jacobs and a double from Duski Staggers.

Treslee had the lone hit for the Lady Maples (4-8, 4-10).

Tuesday, April 30

West Greene 5, Carmichaels 4 – The Pioneers completed the Section 1-A baseball sweep with a road victory at Carmichaels.

West Greene (8-4) pulls ahead of Carmichaels in the section standings with a 7-3 record. The Mikes go to 6-4 in the section and 9-4 overall.

West Greene scored the winning run in the top of the fifth inning. The game was tied 1-1 through three innings. The Pioneers led 4-3 after four innings.

Carmichaels made it a one-run game with a single tally in the bottom of the fifth inning.

West Greene’s Morgan Kiger belted a home run and drove in three runs. Teammate Johnny Lampe went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Colin Brady added a double.

Hayden Hamilton earned the key victory.

The Mikes’ Robbie Wilson-Jones and Liam Lohr both doubled. Wilson-Jones and Dominic Colarusso had two hits apiece, while Colarusso drove in two runs.

Fort Cherry 17, Mapletown 2 – The Rangers scored 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning to roll to a Section 1-A win in three innings.

Matt Sieg had a big game for Fort Cherry (8-2, 10-2) with two doubles, a single and four RBI. Winning pitcher Dylan Lueck, Ben Demascal and Colton Temple all drove in three runs.

Softball

McGuffey 1, Waynesburg Central 0 – McGuffey edged the Lady Raiders for a Section 4-AAA road win.

Winning pitcher Makenna Crothers allowed five hits and struck out nine for McGuffey (6-2, 10-3). Julia Barr drove in the game’s only run in the top of the first inning.

Gina Tedrow allowed just one hit and struck out 11 in the loss.

Waynesburg goes to 4-6 in the section and 6-10 overall. The loss snapped the Lady Raiders’ four-game winning streak at home.

Jefferson-Morgan 13, Mapletown 3 – The Lady Rockets rolled to a Section 2-A road victory.

Jefferson-Morgan improves to 6-4 in the section and 6-6 overall. The Lady Maples slip to 4-7 in the section and 4-9 overall.

West Greene 17, St. Joseph 2 – The Lady Pioneers scored 10 runs in the top of the second inning to roll to a non-section road victory.

Sammi Zimmerman earned her first varsity win, allowing two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. She went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Violey Hill accounted for the Lady Spartans’ runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Payton Gilbert led West Greene (8-6) with two doubles and four RBI. Ali Goodwin went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Emmaline Beazell and Madelyn Roberts both doubled. Ella Scott and Kylee Davis both drove in two runs.
