Local roundup: Mick helps Maples close season with win
Josh Mick was 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs as Mapletown closed its baseball season with a 13-3, five-inning victory over visiting Turkeyfoot Valley in a non-section game.
Freshman Sam Moritz allowed just one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings to earn the win for the Maples (3-14).
Zach Ryan had two hits and two RBIs for Turkeyfoot (2-15) which also got a hit, RBI and run from Luke Bowers. Heath Nicholson took the loss.
Softball
Waynesburg Central 7, Gateway 1 – Gina Tedrow fired a five-hitter with 19 strikeouts as the Lady Raiders toppled the host Lady Gators in a non-section game.
Avery Davis smacked a triple and scored two runs for Waynesburg (7-11) which also got a double and two RBIs from Aidan Snider.
Samantha Robi hit an RBI triple for Gateway (1-16).
Mapletown 6, Beth-Center 3 – Treslee Weston had a double and three RBIs in the Lady Maples’ non-section victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs.
Winning pitcher Devan Clark struck out eight for Mapletown (5-10).
Kendall Welsh had two hits and an RBI for B-C (6-8).
Tuesday, May 7
West Greene 6, Waynesburg Central 2 — Sammi Zimmerman earned the win and drove in four runs to lead the Lady Pioneers to a non-section softball win at Waynesburg Central.
Zimmerman struck out four and walked one in four innings of work. She hit a two-run home run in the third inning and added a two-run single in the seventh inning.
Payton Gilbert pitched the final three innings with three strikeouts to earn the save, and drove in a run with a single.
Gina Tedrow struck out 12 in the loss. Aidan Snider and Eve Pester doubled for the Lady Raiders.
Baseball
Carmichaels 12, Mapletown 2 – Carmichaels finished the Section 1-A schedule on a winning note with a victory in six innings over visiting Mapletown.
The Mikes close with an 8-4 section record and 11-4 overall mark. Mapletown slipped to 0-10 in the section and 2-12 overall.
Carmichaels held leads of 5-2 in the second inning and 10-2 after three innings. The Mikes invoked the mercy rule with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mason Lapana led the Carmichaels attack with four RBI, three hits and two runs scored. Dominic Colarusso drove in three runs with three hits. Liam Lohr and Ambrose Adamson both had two hits and an RBI.
Mapletown’s AJ Vanata hit a home run.
Fort Cherry 7, Jefferson-Morgan 2 — The Rangers scored seven runs in the middle innings for a Section 1-A home win over the Rockets.
Fort Cherry finishes with a 10-2 section record and overall mark of 12-3. The Rockets close with a 4-8 section record and overall mark of 7-10.
Deakyn Dehoet led Jefferson-Morgan with three hits. Drew Adams drove in two runs. John Woodward contributed a double.
Colton Temple smacked a home run, singled and drove in four runs for Fort Cherry. Ryan Huey, Ethan Faletto and Luke Sweder all had two hits.
West Greene 8, California 5 — The Pioneers finished Section 1-A play with a victory over the visiting Trojans.
West Greene finishes 8-4 in the section and 12-5 overall. California slips to 4-8 in the section and 5-13 overall.
Morgan Kiger had a double and two RBI for the Pioneers. Hayden Hamilton was the winning pitcher.
Caden Monticelli had three hits for California. Spencer Petrucci and Logan Hartley doubled.
Waynesburg Central 8, McGuffey 6 — The Raiders’ Kory Taylor, Grant Pack and Alex VanSickle doubled and drove in a run in the Raiders’ Section 4-AAA victory.
Tyler Groves struck out eight in the victory for Waynesburg (10-2, 13-3). McGuffey finishes 6-6 in the section and 6-8 overall.
