Local roundup: Lady Raiders used balanced attack to top Brownsville
Five different players scored for Waynesburg Central in its 5-0 win over Brownsville in Section 2-A girls soccer action on Monday night.
Rylei Rastoka, Kolbi Rastoka, Bree Clutter, Emily Rafferty and Izzy Talpas each scored one goal in the victory. Kolbi Rastoka assisted on two goals.
Goalkeeper Peyton Cowell recorded the shutout.
Girls volleyball
Albert Gallatin 3, Carmichaels 2 – The Lady Colonials won the last three sets to rally for a non-section home victory.
The Lady Mikes won the first two sets, 25-12, 25-20.
Albert Gallatin won the final three sets, 25-15, 25-17, 15-13.
Albert Gallatin’s stats leaders were Mitchell Turner (3 digs, 3 kills), Gabby Delorenzo (2 aces), Mikayla Shea (2 aces, 4 kills), Leah Myers (5 digs, 5 aces, 11 kills), Mia Myers (19 assists, 4 aces, 8 kills), Kymber Hlatky Houze (2 aces, 3 kills), Mary Myers (3 digs), Mya Glisan (9 kills), and Ellie Seese (3 digs, 4 kills).
Mapletown 3, Bentworth 2 – The Lady Maples stormed back to win the last three sets for a non-section road win.
Bentworth grabbed the early lead by set scores 25-17 and 25-15. Mapletown (1-3) came back with set victories of 26-24, 25-17 and 15-13.
Mapletown’s Marley Shifflet (10 digs, 12 assists, 7 aces) and Leah Williamson (10 digs, 10 assists) finished with double-doubles. Treslee Weston (11 kills, 3 aces, 5 digs), Marley Seward (6 aces, 9 digs), and Miranda Fox (4 blocks, 3 kills) also contributed to the win.
Bentworth had noteworthy performances by Chelsea Dindal (9 kills), Zoie McDonald (9 aces, 15 assists), and Chelsea Dindal (21 digs).
Thursday, Sept. 12
Waynesburg Central 194, Brownsville 288 – The visiting Raiders rolled to a Section 3-AA boys golf win at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Waynesburg’s Chase Phillips was medalist with an even-par 37. Rykan Gustafson carded 38 and Dom Benamati shot 39. Joe Kirsch and Aidan Titus both finished with 40. Jarett Tretinik’s 42 was not used.
Ava Rohland had scoring honors for the Falcons with 45.
Boys soccer
Mount Pleasant 5, Waynesburg Central 0 – Five different players scored for the Vikings in a Section 4-AA home win.
Grant Zahrobsky and Lukas Showman both scored a goal and assisted on a goal. Bryson Bankosh, Jarett Garn and Tyler Kurtz also scored one goal apiece. Grayson Gardner and Austin Duvall combined on the shutout.
Girls volleyball
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Avella 0 – The Lady Rockets won their first Section 3-A match of the season against Avella.
Emilee Bazzoli led Jefferson-Morgan (1-1, 3-4) with 12 digs. Alisa Long had 10 digs. Isabelle Bazzoli was strong at the net with 10 kills. Alaina McCollumn finished with 12 assists.
Waynesburg Central 3, Burgettstown 0 – The Lady Raiders were tough at home for a Section 3-AA victory.
Waynesburg (4-0, 5-0) won by the scores, 25-13, 25-22, 25-16.
Waynesburg Central was led by Emily Rafferty (14 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces), Bailey Rafferty (9 assists, 9 digs, 4 kills), Ani Cree (7 digs), Lelia McCollum (11 digs, 4 assists, 2 aces), and Gina Tedrow (9 assists, 2 aces).
Carmichaels 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Mikes rolled to a Section 3-A win at Mapletown.
Carmichaels swept to victory by the scores, 25-15, 25-13, 25-21.
Ashton Batis (11 digs, 1 kill, 3 aces, 3 assists) Pacey Pratt (5 digs, 5 kills, 4 aces), Avery Voithofer (11 digs, 5 aces, 12 assists), Bailey Barnyak (7 digs, 6 kills), and Brenna Walker (3 kills) all contributed in the Lady Mikes’ road win.
Mapletown (0-2, 0-3) was led by Treslee Weston (8 kills, 14 digs), Marley Seward (4 kills, 12 digs), Marley Shifflet (6 assists, 5 digs), and Miranda Fox (4 kills, 6 digs).
Wednesday, Sept. 11
Carmichaels 215, Waynesburg Central 217 – Carmichaels kept its Section 3-AA boys golf playoff hopes alive with a victory over visiting Waynesburg Central at Carmichaels Golf Club.
The Mikes (7-4) pulled into a second-place tie with the Raiders (9-3) at 7-3 with two matches remaining.
Connor Lapana led Carmichaels with 40. Nathan Dursa and Jase Zdravecky both shot 41. Eli Hastings (46) and Zach Murphy (47) rounded out the scoring. Aydan Bate’s 48 did not count.
The Raiders’ Rykan Gustafson shared medalist honors with a 40. Chase Phillips (42), Joe Kirsch (44), Dom Benamati (45), and Jarett Tretinik (46) closed the scoring.
McGuffey 214, Jefferson-Morgan 223 – The Highlanders remained undefeated in Section 3-AA play with a road win at Greene County Country Club.
Logan Crowe was low man for McGuffey (10-0, 12-1) with 2-over 38. Joel Sovich and Brody Wagner both shot 42. Josh Rusmisel finished with 44, and Jacob Ealy and Vaughn Fleissner both shot 48.
Urijah Teasdale secured medalist honors for the Rockets (6-5, 7-8) with even-par 36. Clay Wilson also broke 40 with a 38. Brayden Ellsworth (47), Darien Marion (47), and Brendan Wood (52) closed out the scoring. Jack Shaffer’s 55 did not count.
Girls soccer
Waynesburg Central 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Peyton Cowell was tough in the nets in the Lady Raiders’ shutout victory in Section 2-A action.
Jaden Tretinik scored an unassisted goal and Kolbi Rastoka converted Emily Rafferty’s pass into a goal.
Tuesday, Sept. 10
West Greene 15, Washington 50; Waynesburg Central 26, West Greene 29; Seton-La Salle 28*, Waynesburg Central 28; Waynesburg Central 26, Chartiers-Houston 29; Seton-La Salle 26, West Greene 31; West Greene 26, Chartiers-Houston 29; Waynesburg Central 15, Washington 50 – Waynesburg’s Will Maxwell finished first with a time of 20:13 in the Section 3-AA boys cross country meet held at Chartiers-Houston.
West Greene’s Jackson Grimes was second in 20:25, with the Raiders’ Craig Rohanna third with a time of 20:40.
Girls cross country
West Greene 25, Chartiers-Houston 30; West Greene 15, Seton-La Salle 50, West Greene 15, Waynesburg Central 15, West Greene 15, Washington 50 – The Lady Pioneers’ Eryka Hackney finished fourth with a time of 28:03 in a Section 3-AA meet at Chartiers-Houston.
Teammate Emily Stokes placed fifth in 28:57.
Waynesburg’s Kiley Bledsoe finished eighth in 29:20.
Boys golf
Carmichaels 224, Bentworth 242 – Nathan Dursa, Connor Lapana and Jase Zdravecky all shot 44 in the Mikes’ Section 3-AA road win at Chippewa Golf Course.
Zach Murphy shot 45 and Aydan Bate and Eli Hastings both finished with 47 for Carmichaels (6-3, 6-4).
Ross Skerbetz was the low man for the Bearcats (1-9, 1-11) with 44.
Girls volleyball
Waynesburg 3, Chartiers-Houston 0 – The Lady Raiders powered to a Section 3-AA road victory by the scores 25-13, 25-18 and 25-19.
Waynesburg Central (3-0, 4-0) was led by Emily Rafferty (12 kills), Ani Cree with (7 kills, 6 digs), Railey Bochna (8 kills), Bailey Rafferty (18 assists, 4 digs, 3 aces), Gina Tedrow (7 assists, 6 aces, 4 digs), and Lelia McCollum (11 digs, 4 assists, 2 aces).
Beth-Center 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Bearcats swept past visiting Mapletown for a Section 3-A win.
Beth-Center won by the scores, 25-9, 25-14, 25-10. Mapletown slips to 0-1 in the section and 0-2 overall.
Carmichaels 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Carmichaels rolled to a Section 3-A win over the visiting Lady Rockets.
The Lady Mikes swept to victory by the scores, 26-24, 25-12, 25-16.
Ashton Batis led Carmichaels with 23 digs. Pacey Pratt had a double-double with 16 digs and 10 kills. Bailey Barnyak finished with 14 digs and 13 kills. Avery Voithofer added 25 assists and four digs.
Boys soccer
Southmoreland 2, Waynesburg Central 0 – Jack Ryan and Hunter Ryan scored for the Scotties in a Section 4-AA win.
Southmoreland improves to 3-1 in the section and 5-2 overall. The Raiders slip to 0-3 in the section and 0-4 overall.
