Local roundup: Andrews pitches Mikes past West Greene
Carmichaels’ Colin Andrews threw a six-hit shutout in a Section 1-A baseball win over West Greene at Carmichaels Area High School on Monday.
Carmichaels improved to 8-3 in section play and 11-4 overall.
Andrews had seven strikeouts and walked one in earning the pitching victory.
The Mikes scored the only run Andrews would need in the third when Dayton Reynolds reached on a bunt single and scored on Robbie Wilson-Jones’ double to center field.
Carmichaels added an insurance run in the sixth when Dillon Fisher doubled and Brody Pratt scored on Brayden Andrews’ single to shortstop. Pratt had advanced to third base on a passed ball prior to touching home plate.
Fisher also tripled for two hits. Andrews had two singles.
Xavier Lucey and Will Shipman had back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the seventh inning for the Pioneers (2-9, 3-12), but Colin Andrews recorded two strikeouts and induced a groundout to Wilson-Jones at shortstop to finish the game.
Lucey and Shipman had two hits apiece.
Thursday, May 1
Waynesburg Central 14, Bentworth 0 – Gina Tedrow tossed a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Kolbi Rastoka smacked a home run as the Lady Raiders blanked the Lady Bearcats in a five-inning, Section 4-2A softball game.
Aidan Snider had a single and three RBIs for Waynesburg (8-2, 11-5) which also got a double, single and an RBI from Ellie Makel and two RBIs apiece from Bre Kerr and Bria Stepheonson.
Zoie McDonald had the lone hit for Bentworth (7-8, 4-5) with a fourth-inning double.
The Lady Raiders combined nine walks, an error and three singles to score nine runs in the first inning.
Baseball
Carmichaels 12, Avella 6 – Brayden Andrews had two hits and three RBIs and Jordan Davis doubled and also knocked in three runs as the Mikes clinched a playoff spot with a Section 1-A win at Avella in the completion of a game suspended from April 29.
Colin Andrews had three hits, Parker Hewitt contributed two singles and two RBIs and Cooper Richards doubled, singled and drove in a run for Carmichaels (7-3, 10-4). Winning pitcher Jase Zdravecky gave up four earned runs with one walk and one strikeout in five innings.
Avella scored two runs in the first inning but the Mikes answered with five in the second and were never threatened again.
Losing pitcher Logan Fedak doubled, singled and drove in four runs and Bryce Wright had four singles and two RBIs for the Eagles (6-6, 10-6), who also got three hits from Hayden Gatewood.
Jefferson-Morgan 9, Washington 1 – Drew Adams hurled a three-hitter and John Woodward was 4 for 4 with a double and four RBIs as the Rockets romped over the visiting Prexies in a non-section game.
Adams struck out 11 and walked none.
Joe Bair had two hits and Brayden Ellsworth and Evan Kniha each had a double and an RBI for J-M (11-3) which also got a single, run and three stolen bases from Deakyn DeHoet and a single and two RBIs from Brenton Barnhart.
Isaac Charnik doubled and knocked in the only run for Washington (4-13).
Trinity 10, Waynesburg Central 0 – Matthew Robaugh tripled, doubled and singled in the Class 5A Hillers’ six-inning, non-section victory over the host Raiders.
Owen Samogala had two hits and two RBIs, Kaden Hathaway also knocked in two runs and Derek Falvo singled twice for Trinity (8-8). Winning pitcher Luke Poland allowed two hits and five walks with five strikeouts in four innings.
Alex VanSickle doubled for Waynesburg (14-2). Vince Maley took the loss.
Wednesday, April 30
West Greene 13, Beth-Center 3 – Payton Gilbert was 3 for 4 with an RBI and was the winning pitcher as the Lady Pioneers triumphed over the visiting Lady Bulldogs in a six-inning Section 2-A softball game.
Kylee Davis had two hits and two RBIs and Khyler Davis and Kendra Tharp each contributed a single and two RBIs for West Greene (8-1, 13-1) which also got an RBI apiece from Marissa Tharp, Emmaline Beazell, Katie Brudnock and Melony Shreve.
Gilbert allowed five hits and no walks with five strikeouts.
Jenna Pohill doubled and singled, Keira Lamp also had two hits and Bella Stepp had a double and an RBI for Beth-Center (2-7, 2-11) which also got two RBIs from Alli Lynch. Hannah Belmont took the loss.
Jefferson-Morgan 13, Avella 0 – Brooklynne Snyder was 4 for 4, including a double, and drove in two runs in the Lady Rockets’ Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Eagles (3-6, 4-10).
Gabby Marmie hit a home run and Ashlynn Snyder contributed three RBIs for J-M (5-4, 8-5) which avenged a 10-9 loss at Avella on April 17.
Tuesday, April 29
Carmichaels 15, Mapletown 0 – Bailey Barnyak threw a three-inning perfect game and Duski Staggers was 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs in the Lady Mikes’ Section 2-A win over the visiting Lady Maples.
Barnyak struck out eight of the nine batters she faced.
Kaitlyn Waggett was 3 for 3 and Ke’Lani Chun doubled and single for Carmichaels (8-0, 12-0) which also got two hits and two RBIs from Ashton Batis and two singles from Carys McConnell.
Cora Roberts took the loss for Mapletown (1-9, 3-12).
Baseball
Waynesburg Central 13, Keystone Oaks 3 – Alex VanSickle was 3 for 3 with a double, triple an RBI and two runs scored as the first-place Raiders thumped the visiting Golden Eagles in a Section 4-3A game.
Derek Turcheick tripled and knocked in two runs, C.J. Corwin had a double and two RBIs and Ethan Kiger and Grant Pack each had a single and two RBIs for Waynesburg (10-0, 14-1) which also got a double from Jarrett Tretinik.
Winning pitcher Austin Surber gave up one earned run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4 â…“ innings. VanSickle recorded the final two outs in relief.
Brady McDine had the only two hits for Keystone Oaks (4-6, 7-7).
Greensburg Central Catholic 8, West Greene 2 – Anthony Grippo and Nick O’Mahoney both singled twice as the first-place Centurions knocked off the Pioneers in a Section 1-A game.
GCC (8-1, 10-1) also got doubles from Bobby Smithnosky and Brody Bothell.
Jeannette 10, Mapletown 0 – Evan Yargeau had three hits and was the winning pitcher as the Jayhawks shut out the Maples in a Section 1-A game.
Spencer Yeager doubled and singled for Mapletown (0-10, 2-12).
