Local roundup: Lady Raiders knock off Charleroi, 62-28

Waynesburg Central built a 14-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a Section 3-3A girls basketball victory over visiting Charleroi on Monday.

Waynesburg (4-2, 6-2) had a 36-17 advantage at halftime and built up a 34-point lead.

The Lady Raiders’ Tess Pauley scored a game-high 21 points. Teammates Emma Blair and Peyton Cowell scored 10 points apiece.

Eden Smith led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 18 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 33, Carmichaels 17 — The Lady Rockets won a defensive battle in Section 3-2A play at Carmichaels Area High School.

The Lady Mikes had a 10-4 lead after the first quarter, but Jefferson-Morgan used an 8-0 advantage in the second period for a 12-10 halftime edge.

The Lady Rockets won the third quarter, 12-1, and the fourth, 9-6.

Beautiful Medlen led the game in scoring with 13 points.

Bentley Lukas and Paytain Jordan led Carmichaels in scoring with six points apiece.

Saturday, Jan. 10

Frazier 55, West Greene 49 — Kolby Stewart recorded a double-double with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds as Frazier defeated visiting West Greene in a non-section boys basketball game.

The Commodores led 16-6 after the first quarter but the Pioneers pulled within 24-18 at halftime and trailed just 33-31 after three. Frazier used a 22-18 edge in the final frame to secure the win.

Brant Alekson added 12 points for the Commodores (5-7) who also got 10 points from Austin Stewart.

Matt Wassil led West Greene (3-8) with 22 points and was followed by Darren Knight and Jordan Hill with 10 each.

Friday, Jan. 9

Chartiers-Houston 70, Mapletown 11 — Wes Yeager scored 13 points as the Buccaneers (6-0, 11-2) beat the visiting Maples (0-6, 0-12) in a Section 3-2A game.

Carson Vanata led Mapletown with five points.

Ligonier Valley 51, Waynesburg Central 49 — Michael Wisniewski scored 18 points and Michael Vargulish-Graver had 14 as the host Rams nipped the Raiders in a Section 4-3A game.

Ligonier Valley (3-1, 7-5) overcame a 23-16 halftime deficit by out-scoring Waynesburg 24-16 in the third to take a 40-39 lead. The Rams held an 11-10 edge in the fourth quarter.

Jackson Dean led the Raiders (2-2, 4-8) with 14 points. Austin Surber contributed seven rebounds and five assists and Dane Woods also grabbed seven boards.

Other scores: Jefferson-Morgan 65, Carmichaels 24; Fort Cherry 72, West Greene 37.

Thursday, Jan. 8

Serra Catholic 55, West Greene 38 – Bella Dumbroski scored 21 points and the Lady Eagles took control early to defeat the host Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A girls basketball victory.

Serra (6-0, 7-3) jumped out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and was up 34-20 at halftime and 42-32 after three.

West Greene whittled the gap to 44-38 midway through the fourth quarter but the Lady Eagles closed the game on a 11-point run.

Lexi Pearce contributed 16 points for Serra and Niki Sfanos chipped in with 11 points.

Kendra Tharp recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Pioneers (4-2, 8-3), who also got 10 points from Madelyn Roberts and 10 rebounds from Katie Brudnock.

Keystone Oaks 48, Waynesburg Central 40 – Hannah York and Natalee Tortorella both scored 18 points and the Golden Eagles took control in the second quarter on their way to a Section 3-3A victory over the visiting Lady Raiders.

The loss dropped Waynesburg (3-2, 10-2) into a third-place tie with the Golden Eagles (3-2, 7-4) behind first-place Seton LaSalle (5-0) and second-place McGuffey (4-1).

Keystone Oaks held a slim 15-14 lead after the first quarter then used a 10-3 advantage in the second to go up 25-17 at halftime. The Lady Raiders sliced the margin to 35-31 after three but the Golden Eagles used a 13-9 edge in the fourth to secure the win.

Tess Pauley led Waynesburg with 16 points.

California 49, Jefferson-Morgan 23 – Hayley Gibson and Lila Mitchell rang up 12 points apiece in the Lady Trojans’ Section 3-2A win over the host Lady Rockets (0-3, 5-6).

California led 19-6, 30-12 and 36-17 at the quarter breaks.

Olivia Gibson added 10 points for the Lady Trojans (2-1, 5-7).

Chartiers-Houston 47, Carmichaels 13 – Ali Wingard and McKenzie Walsh each had 10 points as the Lady Buccaneers (4-0, 11-1) triumphed over the host Lady Mikes in a Section 3-2A game.

Ke’lani Chun topped Carmichaels (0-3, 1-11) in scoring with seven points.

Clairton 53, Mapletown 18 – The Lady Bears (2-4, 4-5) beat the host Lady Maples (0-6, 1-13) in a Section 2-A game.

Wednesday, Jan. 7

Jefferson-Morgan 60, Brownsville 4 — The Rockets, powered by five pins, rolled over the Falcons in a Section 3-2A wrestling match.

Brownsville’s points came on a major decision at 145 pounds by Kody Gates.

Caleb Dulaney (114), Connor Pinchok (127), Ej Lingenfield (139), Alek Palko (172) and Landon Heath (285) recorded the five falls for Jefferson-Morgan.

Chartiers-Houston 43, West Greene 30 — John Dove (121) Kamden Stamm (127), Peyton Garove (139), Caleb Tewell (145) and Tyler Clayton (215) had a pin each in the Buccaneers’ Section 1-2A victory at West Greene.

The Pioneers got pins from Noah Collins (133), Reece Tharp (189) and Colin Whyte (heavyweight).

Men’s basketball

Chatham 98, Waynesburg 73 — Lovenson Xavier made 10 of his first 12 shots en route to a 32-point performance as Chatham defeated visiting Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Chatham (2-1, 7-4) made 18 three-point field goals, including six by Xavier. The Cougars went 18-for-34 from behind the stripe.

Chatham made 11 of its three-pointers in the first half, when it forged a 45-33 lead. The Cougars shot 58 percent from the field for the game and 66 percent in the second half.

Waynesburg (0-3, 4-8) made 11 three-pointers but the Yellow Jackets didn’t have enough offensive firepower to stay with Chatham in the second half. Casey Keesee led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points and Scott Bilovus added 12.

Women’s basketball

Chatham 71, Waynesburg 65 — Alyssa Laukus scored a game-high 21 points, Madison Nereu added 19 and Chatham used a pivotal spurt midway through the fourth quarter to beat visiting Waynesburg in a PAC game.

Chatham (1-2, 8-3) led 54-53 in the fourth before it embarked on a 7-0 run that left Waynesburg (1-2, 5-7) playing catch-up the rest of the way.

Kara McFadden scored 14 points and Waynesburg Central graduate Clara-Paige Miller had 13 for the Yellow Jackets, who closed to within four points three times in the closing minutes.

Tuesday, Jan. 6

Southmoreland 47, Waynesburg Central 46 — The Scotties out-scored the visiting Raiders 14-10 in the fourth quarter to pull out a one-point boys basketball win in a battle for sole possession of first place in Section 4-3A.

Waynesburg (2-1, 4-7) led 8-4 after the first quarter, Southmoreland (3-0, 6-6) surged to a 21-20 halftime advantage but the Raiders went back ahead 36-33 after three.

Noah Felentzer topped the Scotties in scoring with 11 points and Brock Pritts added 10.

Dane Woods had a game-high 15 points for Waynesburg and Cole Headlee was right behind with 14.

Carmichaels 68, Mapletown 37 — The Mikes took control in the second quarter and pulled away from the host Maples for a Section 3-2A victory.

The score was tied 13-13 after the first quarter before Carmichaels (2-2, 3-6) pushed out to a 29-20 halftime lead and carried a 50-31 advantage into the final frame.

Stephen Lewis scored a game-high 18 points for the Mikes, who also got 14 points from Chase Ankrom and 10 from Scott Maskil.

Carson Vanata dropped in 16 points for Mapletown (0-5, 0-11).

Jefferson-Morgan 42, Fort Cherry 37 — The unbeaten Rockets rallied from a six-point deficit after the first quarter to defeat the visiting Rangers and keep a share of first place in Section 3-2A with Chartiers-Houston.

Fort Cherry led 15-9 after the first quarter and 25-19 at halftime but Jefferson-Morgan held the Rangers to just three points in the third in taking a 29-28 advantage and held a 13-9 edge in the fourth.

Jeremiah Robertson led the Rockets (3-0, 11-0) with a game-high 19 points.

Landon Trnasky had 14 points for Fort Cherry (3-2, 5-5) and Connor Vansickle added 10.

West Greene 76, Burgettstown 61 — Landon Hill racked up a game-high 27 points as the Pioneers out-scored the host Blue Devils 50-23 in the second half to overcome as 12-point halftime deficit and claim a Section 3-2A win.

West Greene (2-2, 3-6) fell behind 15-12 in the first quarter and 38-26 at intermission but sliced the gap to 52-49 after three then rode a 27-9 edge in the final frame to victory.

Matt Wassil tallied 13 points for the Pioneers.

Blake Neal had 18 points for Burgettstown (0-5, 2-10) and was followed by Trent Stevens (16) and Bryce Speer (10).

Girls Basketball

Brownsville 48, Carmichaels 32 — Ava Clark scored a game-high 21 points in the Lady Falcons’ non-section win over the visiting Lady Mikes.

Carmichaels was up 10-8 after the first quarter before Brownsville (3-9) bounced back to take a 25-17 halftime lead and held a 37-23 advantage after three.

Ciara Horabik followed with Clark with 17 points, including five 3-pointers for the Lady Falcons.

Joselyn Carter tallied nine points for the Lady Mikes (1-11).
