Local roundup: Lohr’s key hit propels Copperheads past Hopwood

Liam Lohr’s two-run double in the top of the ninth inning helped lead the Carmichaels Copperheads to a 4-2 victory over Hopwood in Fayette County Baseball League action at Hutchinson Field on Friday.

Lohr may have had the game-winning hit, but Carmichaels starting pitcher Matt Bamford had 15 strikeouts over eight innings. He was relieved in the ninth for Ben Shields, who would earn the pitch victory, after throwing 136 pitches (87 strikes).

Bamford yielded two runs (none earned) on seven hits and walked two. Shields threw a scoreless ninth without allowing a hit. He walked one.

Shields was instrumental in pacing the Copperheads (2-1-1) offensively with a two-run double in the third inning that scored Devin Fluhmann and Alex VanSickle for a 2-0 lead.

Wyatt Nehls scored for Hopwood (2-4) when Ryan Covelens’ single to left field was misplayed to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third frame. Covelens drove in Anthony Piasecki for the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Shields had three hits and drove in two runs. Teammate Dom Colarusso had two singles.

Matthew Firestone had two base hits for Hopwood.

TUESDAY, JUNE 9

CARMICHAELS 4, CHARLEROI 4 — Charleroi rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and its game with Carmichaels eventually ended in a tie after nine innings during a Fayette County Baseball League game.

The Copperheads held a 4-2 when Troy Miller hit a one-out double to start the Magicians uprising in the seventh. Tyler Sankovich sliced the lead to one with a two-out RBI double and Colton Brightwell followed with a run-scoring single.

Alex Vansickle homered and singled and Devin Flumann doubled and singled for Carmichaels, which also got a run-scoring double from Brodee Latocha, doubles by Aaron Previsky and Luke Camden, an RBI single from Robbie Wilson-Jones and a sacrifice fly from Ben Shields.

Gianni Cantini pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Copperheads, allowing four runs on 10 hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Elias Lippincott and Miller both had a double and two singles, Sankovich had two hits and two RBIs and Remington Lessman had two hits and one RBI for the Magicians.

MONDAY, JUNE 8

BROWNSVILLE 2, CARMICHAELS 1 — Nash Petroff had the game-winning hit and pitched a complete game in Brownsville’s victory over Carmichaels Post 400 in Fayette County American Legion Baseball play at Brownsville.

Petroff hit a line-drive double to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead and he yielded one earned run on three hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts and two walks. He threw 95 pitches (59 strikes).

Brody Behout took the pitching loss, but had a quality outing in allowing two earned runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked two in throwing 85 pitches (52 strikes).

Brownsville (1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second frame when Joshua Huston scored on Johnathan Vasbinder’s line drive to center field.

Huston led off the inning with a single before Aiden Napolillo was hit-by-pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Bebout recorded a strikeout prior to Vasbinder’s single.

Carmichaels (2-3) turned a double play to end the frame without any further damage.

Petroff’s two-bagger came with two outs in the fifth to send Jonah Dillinger home. Dillinger singled on a line drive to left field on an 0-2 count to set the stage for Petroff.

The visitors scored their lone run in the top of the seventh inning when Bebout scored on a groundout to second base. Conor Lapana advanced to third on the play, but Petroff struck out the next batter to end the game.

Bebout was hit-by-pitch to lead off the frame and advanced to second when Lapana walked. Bebout and Lapana moved up one base on a wild pitch before Petroff recorded a strikeout for the first out.

Jordan Davis had two hits for Carmichaels, and Bebout singled to center field in the fourth.

Brownsville’s Todd Settles singled to left field and stole second in the sixth, but Bebout induced back-to-back groundouts to end the inning.
