Avella鈥檚 Isaiah Bradick pitches against West Greene as center fielder Westley Burchianti looks on in the background during a Section 1-A game at Center Township Park on March 28. Bradick pitched five scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher in the Eagles鈥 2-1 victory.

Isaiah Bradick and Brian Martos combined on a four-hitter and Avella held off West Greene for a 2-1 win in a Section 1-A baseball pitchers battle on Thursday, March 28.

The Eagles (2-0, 3-0) also won a tight clash on March 25, 3-1, in a two-game sweep of the Pioneers.

Bradick pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win and Martos got the final six outs for the save, allowing one unearned run in the seventh.

Losing pitcher Darren Knight gave up two runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts in tossing a complete game.

鈥淲e got good pitching. We just didn鈥檛 hit. Pretty simple,鈥 West Greene coach Lenny Lohr said. 鈥淲hen you only give up two runs you should win. Our hitting just isn鈥檛 there right now.

鈥淎vella did a nice job pitching, both of their guys. Our pitcher did a really good job, too, going the whole game. We just needed to give him some run support.鈥

Kameron Tedrow came close twice to deliver at the plate for the Pioneers (0-2, 2-3) but was denied both times.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, West Greene鈥檚 Johnny Lampe singled and stole second but Avella center fielder Westley Burchianti made a diving catch of Tedrow鈥檚 line drive in left-center to end the inning.

Tedrow came close to tying the game again in the bottom of the seventh after Colten Thomas scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 but his drive over the left field fence hooked just foul.

鈥淥ur clean-up hitting Cam Tedrow hit the ball hard,鈥 Lohr said. 鈥淭hey made a nice play there the one inning and he did hit it out into the trees that last at bat but just barely foul. Otherwise we鈥檇 be still playing.鈥

The Pioneers loaded the bases with none out in the first but Bradick got two strikeouts and a line out to left fielder Cole Jaworowski to escape the jam.

Singles by Jaworowski, Martos and Bradick produced a run in the third to give Avella a 1-0 lead and Martos doubled in Bryce Wright in the top of the seventh to make it 2-0.

West Greene loaded the bases again with two outs in the fifth but Bradick got an inning-ending pop out to second baseman Martos to strand three more runners.

Thomas had two hits, two stolen bases and scored the lone run for West Greene which also got doubles from Knight and Morgan Kiger.

鈥淒arren missed the game at Avella with strep throat,鈥 Lohr pointed out. 鈥淗e鈥檚 our lead-off batter, too. He kind of makes us go.

鈥淚 think we can compete well in this section. If we just get a few things cleaned up and start putting the ball in play a little better, our defense is as good as anybody鈥檚. We鈥檝e just got to keep working on the hitting. We鈥檙e struggling right now, but it鈥檒l come around.鈥
