Cattle and swine winners determined
?DUNBAR TWP. 鈥� Catherine Work of Smock earned titles of supreme champion female in open class and 4-H grand champion female in beef breeding competition at the Fayette County Fair on Wednesday morning.
Hunter Clay of Belle Vernon became 4-H reserve grand champion female, while Jessica Butler took the title of supreme champion bull in the open class show, all held simultaneously in the Indoor Arena.
The 11-year-old daughter of Bob and Pam Work is a fifth-grade student at Franklin School in the Uniontown Area School District. She won with a junior yearling that was champion female Angus and also had the 4-H reserve grand champion female Angus.
鈥淭his is my third year in 4-H. I like showing my animals,鈥� said Work.
Clay, 15, is a sophomore at Frazier High School. A son of John and Jillian Clay, he won with an animal that was champion female crossbred for both 4-H and open class.
鈥淚鈥檝e been showing cows since I was 6 or 7. It felt pretty good,鈥� he said of the win.
Other results in the breeding beef cattle show included: crossbred 鈥� Tim Mills, open class reserve champion female, champion cow-calf and reserve champion bull; Jessica Butler, 4-H reserve champion female and champion bull; Hereford 鈥� Debbie D鈥橧sadoro, open class champion female; Triple Creek Farm, open class reserve champion female and champion bull; Tyler Anderson, 4-H champion female; Shorthorn 鈥� Ian Erdly, open class and 4-H champion female; Kylie Hamborsky, open class reserve champion female; Simmental 鈥� Jake Diamond, open class and 4-H grand champion female; all other breeds 鈥� Angela Becker, open class and 4-H champion female; Toni Marie DeCarlo, open class and 4-H reserve champion female; Toni Knopsnider, champion bull.
Meanwhile, two Grindstone brothers claimed top honors in Tuesday night鈥檚 4-H market swine competition as Nick Gardner, 13, earned grand champion and Scott Gardner, 15, was named reserve grand champion.
They are the sons of Bill and Jamie Gardner and attend Brownsville Area Senior High School, where Nick Gardner is a freshman and Scott Gardner is a sophomore.
鈥淚t was the best feeling in the world. I beat my brother 鈥� finally,鈥� said Nick Gardner with a smile.
Kidding aside, Scott Gardner noted, 鈥淓very time we show, we鈥檙e helping each other out. It鈥檚 a team effort 鈥� me, him and my Dad.鈥�
鈥淭oday it was Team Gardner,鈥� Nick Gardner agreed.
