State police investigating shooting death in Menallen Township
A man was found dead in his vehicle after he was shot during an apparent attempted home invasion in the Village of Searights early Tuesday.
State police were called to 214 Village of Searights in Menallen Township at about 3:20 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a home invasion.
State police Trooper Stefani Lucas said the man broke a window and attempted to climb inside. An altercation occurred, followed by gunfire.
鈥淎t least one shot was fired by someone inside the residence,鈥 she said.
The man, who has not been identified, was shot in the leg. Police said he fled in his vehicle a short distance and hit a tree.
Police said the man was known to those inside the apartment, but they have not yet determined what motivated him to enter through the window.
Lucas said there was at least one woman and two men in the residence at the time of the shooting. The woman lives at the apartment, and two others were there lawfully, she said. The woman has children, but she said she does not know if they were home.
She said charges are pending against the two men. Police do not expect to charge the woman.
Lucas said police have responded to multiple calls in the area, but she did not recall calls to that address.
Neighbors described the apartment in the small federal housing project as a hotbed of 鈥渢rouble.鈥 They reported that they often see people who do not live there coming and going from the area.
Some neighbors who declined to be identified reported hearing an argument at the apartment earlier in the night between a man and a woman, but said that was nothing out of the ordinary.
Other neighbors said they were shaken that a fatal shooting occurred so close to home.
