A Uniontown mother was strapping her children into a vehicle when her toddler locked the door, trapping himself and his younger sister inside Thursday afternoon.
The mom immediately called 911, and Uniontown City Police rushed to 19 Pershing Court to rescue the children from the hot vehicle at about 1 p.m.
鈥淟uckily, our units were close by,鈥� said Uniontown City Police Lt. Tom Kolencik. 鈥淓verything fell into place today.
He said the mom put the 2-year-old in the vehicle and was walking to the other side of the car to secure her 7-month old daughter when the toddler hit the automatic lock buttons. Police made forced entry into the vehicle, and freed them after about 15 minutes from the time the doors were locked. Temperatures were hovering around 86 degrees.
He said the children were transported to Uniontown Hospital by Fayette EMS for evaluation, but they did not appear to be injured.
He said they were 鈥渇lushed and sweating, upset and scared.鈥�
鈥淭hey were more scared than they were injured,鈥� he said.
Kolencik said it is important to never leave children or animals unattended in a vehicle, especially in hot weather.
鈥淭hings happen fast,鈥� he said.
He described the incident as 鈥渁 complete accident鈥� and said no charges will be filed against the mother.
