Firefighters battle brush fire in Menallen Township

A brush fire appeared to start in this area near a trailer in Menallen Township at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, according to New Salem firefighter Harry Denny. A rekindle was reported at 2 p.m.

Multiple fire crews were called to battle a brush fire at the intersection of Rohaley Lane and Waltersburg Road at about 10:30 a.m., which took about two hours to contain and rekindled at 2 p.m.
Firefighters fought through the heat to contain a small brush fire in Menallen Township endangering a trailer Thursday.
One firefighter was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, officials said.
鈥淚t almost ran off on us,鈥� a Grindstone firefighter said.
Crews were called at about 10:30 a.m. to the intersection of Rohaley Lane and Waltersburg Road. It took four departments about two hours to contain the blaze, and some patches continued smoldering at about 1 p.m. It appeared the fire started near the trailer and moved uphill, covering about an acre of land before it encountered an open field, said New Salem Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Harry Denny. The fire rekindled at about 2 p.m.
鈥淚t took a lot of firefighters to fight this here. You can鈥檛 do a lot with four or five guys,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 was raking as fast as I could and as fast as I was raking, it would pop up in another place.鈥�
He said the crews encountered challenges fighting the blaze.
鈥淲ind, the smoke, and definitely the heat,鈥� he said. 鈥淎 lot of it was the smoke. Man, I had to come down the hill my eyes were burning so bad.鈥�
While the cause of the fire was undetermined Thursday afternoon, he reminded residents to monitor burning, especially in dry and windy weather.
At 1 p.m., he predicted the fire would rekindle.
鈥淲e鈥檒l have to come back. That鈥檚 all we can do,鈥� he said.
New Salem fire department was assisted by Smock, Grindstone and Flatwoods fire department and a Fayette EMS rehab unit.
