A car hit an A.L. Wilson Elementary School bus on State Route 857 near Elm Street in Fairchance Thursday afternoon. One student was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Thirty-nine students were on the bus.

A student suffered minor injuries when a car careened into a school bus loaded with students on their way home from A.L. Wilson Elementary School Thursday afternoon during a 鈥渇lash ice storm鈥 in Fairchance.

There were 39 students on the bus when a driver reportedly began sliding down State Route 857 near Elm Street and crossed over the center line. The bus driver took evasive actions, driving off the road. The car slammed into the bus and a utility pole, officials said.

One student who reported abdominal pain was taken to Uniontown Hospital by Southwest EMS, according to Albert Gallatin Area School District Transportation Director Bill Parnham.

He said the students were severely shaken.

Officials said it was fortunate no one was severely injured.

鈥淩eally fortunate,鈥 said Fairchance Fire Chief Raymond Eicher. 鈥淸The students] were more scared than anything.鈥

The driver of the car reported no injuries. Both the car and bus were severely damaged and towed from the scene.

Eicher said there was about an inch of slush on the road when he arrived on the scene.

Parents were notified and asked to pick up their children, Parnham said.

鈥淥ur transportation committee went into action immediately and started calling all the parents,鈥 he said.

A woman rushed onto the scene, looking grim, and led a young boy by the hand from the bus.

The school nurse, guidance counselor and principal were also on the scene.

State police is investigating.
