Christine Troll Applause

Christina Troll, representing VFW Pennsylvania, won first place in the national Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy competition, held at the recent VFW National Conference in Washington D.C.

She received the $30,000 T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship award and delivered her winning essay.

Troll, a senior, was sponsored by VFW Post 554 and its Auxiliary in Somerset. She represented the 23rd District, which comprises Fayette and Somerset Counties.

The Voice of Democracy Program is an oral essay competition for students in grades nine through 12. This year鈥檚 theme was 鈥淲hy My Vote Matters,鈥 chosen by B.J. Lawrence, national commander.

鈥淩aising today鈥檚 youth to be patriotic, civically minded Americans is vital to ensuring a prosperous future for our nation,鈥 said Lawrence. 鈥淭he VFW鈥檚 Voice of Democracy and Patriot鈥檚 Pen competitions help mold today鈥檚 students into the strong and great leaders we鈥檒l need tomorrow.鈥
