CHARLEROI – A 22-year-old man was struck and killed early Wednesday by a train at a railroad crossing in Charleroi.

Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco identified the victim as Anthony Lee Meyer of Charleroi.

The coroner’s office responded to the Fifth Street crossing shortly before 4 a.m. to investigate the fatality, a county 911 supervisor said.

Meyer was pronounced dead at the scene just after 5 a.m.

The rail line is operated by Norfolk Southern.

The train was traveling from Graysville to Baltimore when the man was killed, Norfolk Southern spokeswoman Rachel McDonnell Bradshaw said.

“At Norfolk Southern, the safety of our employees and the communities we serve is our number one priority, McDonnell Bradshaw said.

“Norfolk Southern reminds the public that it is extremely dangerous, and also trespassing, to walk on or within the right-of-way of railroad tracks. People should cross tracks only at designated crossings and use extreme caution at all times,” she said.
