More than two dozen local high schoolers will head to Bridgeville this weekend for the second annual High School Esports Invitational tournament hosted by Point Park University.

Canon-McMillan and Trinity Area students will compete against teams from across the state in three on three Rocket League matchups for cash prizes.

Trinity Area School District Esports Coach Matt Christy is hoping his students can improve on their fourth-place finish from the inaugural 2025 tournament, saying that a fresh roster of “really skilled” players will be key.

The Trinity Area esports team launched in 2020, quickly amassing a dedicated group of students that number over 30, Christy said. “It’s been a heck of a ride ever since.”

These students compete in a variety of online and in-person formats in games such as the car soccer Rocket League, platforming fighter title Super Smash Bros Ultimate and hero shooter Overwatch.

Christy said that the team is in a period of transition, as many established seniors who led the previous tournament squad have since departed.

An influx of “really talented” freshmen have played an essential part in rebuilding the team, and are eager to test their mettle at the tournament, Christy said.

“We’re excited to welcome competitive esports athletes and teams to an amazing opportunity to test their skills, have fun and compete for prizes,” Point Park University senior and event coordinator Caleb Knox said in a statement.

The competition will be run in two parts: a round robin in which each team will play every other team once to determine seeding. The second half will be a double elimination bracket, according to the statement.
