The McDonald Police Department is seeking help from the public in identifying who abandoned several cats at a local park.

In a post to its Facebook page, the department said someone left a cardboard box with a mom cat and her kittens at the East End Park baseball field just before 7 a.m. March 26.

The post included pictures of the cats, along with images from surveillance footage that captured a sedan-type vehicle.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 know who did it. We have some grainy video,鈥 said McDonald police Chief Timothy Motte.

The box containing the cats had been taped shut. The animals were turned over to Nose 2 Tail Cat Rescue in McDonald where they are currently in foster care.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a good thing somebody found them or they wouldn鈥檛 have made it, because the box was taped up,鈥 Motte said.

In a comment on the police department鈥檚 Facebook post, Nose 2 Tail wrote that the cats are clean, friendly and 鈥渃learly were cared for at some point.鈥

The organization called for empathy toward whomever may have left the cats in the box.

鈥淪ituations like this are rarely rooted in cruelty 鈥 more often, they come from desperation, lack of resources or simply not knowing where to turn for help,鈥 reads the comment. 鈥淎fter years in rescue, we鈥檝e learned that most people don鈥檛 make these choices out of ill intent. Many are overwhelmed, under-supported or undereducated about the options available to them.鈥

Anyone with information is asked to call the McDonald Police Department at 724-926-2105
