Theresa Carolyn Coughenour, 87, of Smithfield, passed away peacefully, in her home, Sunday, July 19, 2026.

She was born March 22, 1939, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Lechner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Coughenour; infant daughter, baby Theresa Coughenour; sisters, Betty Jane Lechner and Linda Kay Tuttle; sons-in-law, Bernie Antol and Terry Brozik.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ralph (Charlotte) Coughenour, Carolyn (Randy) Riedmann, Charles Mark Coughenour and Terry Frances Coughenour; her grandchildren, who she loved and adored: Nicole (Steve) Fowler; Luke (Morgan) Coughenour and their children, Ellis, Calvin and Jack; Alison Price and her daughters, Lauryn and Madison – Theresa would say there’s nothing like being a mother, but there’s really nothing like being a grandmother.

Also surviving are siblings, Mary Ann McLaughlin, JL Lechner and Brenda Bowlen; and countless special nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a lifelong member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Church, where she was very active through the years as a teacher, volunteer, member of the choir and Christian Mothers.

She was a graduate of Fairchance Georges High School. She loved to tell how, with her husband and others, they spread the first load of gravel at the Smithfield Little League Field where it is today. She loved being a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader.

Theresa enjoyed all of her jobs, from working at Mac Burchinal’s, Rockwell Meters, as Smithfield Borough secretary to being a rural letter carrier, which she loved.

Her passion was playing cards with her friends. She belonged to countless card clubs over the years through which she was blessed to make so many lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends and family in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 Church Street, Fairchance, Friday, July 24, from 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, July 25, until 9:30 a.m. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in SS. Cyril and Methodious Church, 50 North Morgantown Street, Fairchance.

Interment will follow in Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Smithfield.

The Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at 4 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
