Alberta Mae “Bertie” Nicholson, of Carmichaels, passed away peacefully Monday, July 20, 2026, in her home, at the age of 99 陆. She transitioned from this life in the same manner in which she lived her life on earth: with faith, grace and humility.
Bertie was born February 9, 1927 in Jefferson, a daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie Elizabeth Walters Fischer. She graduated from Jefferson High School and spent her career as a bank bookkeeper, first in Florida, then as head bookkeeper in a bank in Uniontown.
Bertie was an active member of the Carmichaels Methodist Church for more than 50 years, participating in United Methodist Women and the church choir, along with helping to support countless pierogi and Christmas cookie sales, and community dinners.
In her earlier years, she was active in the Carmichaels Women’s Bowling League and the Carmichaels Civic Club. Until recently, she was still attending church, reading, working puzzles and hosting the weekly Wednesday ladies’ card club in her home.
She is survived by her children: Penny Davis (Ron) of Charleston, S.C., John Machesky of Connellsville, Kassy McGourty (Vince) of Clinton, N.J.; and bonus children, Terri Paroda (Robert) of Bishopsville, Md., and Bill Nicholson (Kathy) of Rices Landing; along with 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are her first husband, John Machesky, and second husband, Homer Nicholson; four siblings, Harry Fischer, Dorothy Seals, Florence Seals and Gertrude Lewoc; and one granddaughter, Kaitlin Marie Machesky.
Family and friends are welcome from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, in the Carmichaels Methodist Church, 104 W. South Street, Carmichaels, PA 15320, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Andrew Gump, PhD officiating. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the PAUL M. LESAKO FUNERAL HOME, Inc., Carmichaels, Paul M. Lesako, supervisor and Aaron S. Walker, funeral director.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Carmichaels Methodist Church, in memory of Alberta.
