Vernon W. Tanner, 82, of German Township, formerly of Greensboro, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., with his loving family at his side. Born in Mapletown March 1, 1944, he was a son of the late Allen and Louise McGowen Tanner.

Vernon graduated from Mapletown High School in 1965, where he played in the school band. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and proudly served his country from 1965 to 1973, and received an honorable discharge.

He retired after more than 40 years in the maintenance department of the Mon General Hospital in Morgantown.

Vernon attended the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in McClellandtown.

Vern was a skilled builder, and enjoyed many hobbies including family genealogy, and caring for his pet bird, Charlie and dog, Pennie.

His wife, Arlene Sutton Tanner, passed away July 16, 2020. Also deceased is a sister, Regina Wargo; and brothers, Edwin, Donald and Custer Tanner.

Surviving is one sister, Linda Yancheck of Surprise, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families, including his niece and caregiver, Rhonda Sutton Sluiter; and his close friends, George Lindsay, and Bobby and Kim Thompson.

The family will receive friends in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, Monday, June 15, from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. hour of service, with the Rev. Michael Cogley officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Greensboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to the family at 501 Morgantown Street, Point Marion, PA 15474.
