Sylvia Jean Sunny Lester, 94, of Brownsville, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2026 from complications following an unexpected injury that occurred a few days before at Hillside Manor in Uniontown.
Born December 18, 1931, in Brownsville, she was a daughter of the late John Paul Sunny Szanyi and Julianna Beres Sunny.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Carolyn Szanyi, Rose Kelley, John Szanyi, Regis Sunny, Aulga Sheppleman, Irene Draheim, Eleanor Black, Mary Anne Williams, Robert Sunny, Ronald Sunny, and Geraldine Sunny.
Sylvia was employed as a surgical technician at Brownsville General Hospital for over two decades.
Beyond her medical career, she was a devout member of The Historic Church of St. Peter in Brownsville.
Sylvia loved her family and would host large family reunions usually upwards of 75 people- brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and even a few great-grand-nieces and nephews.
Sylvia loved crocheting, quilting, making crafts, cooking, and baking. She loved the Christmas season, decorating well before Thanksgiving and usually not taking her Christmas decorations down until Easter; she would leave her favorite Nativity scene up all year long.
She is survived by her son, Chris and his wife, Darice Rohaley Lester; grandson, Christopher II; and a brother, James Sunny and his wife, Jane.
Friends will be received in the SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, Thursday, June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday, June 19, until 9:30 a.m. when a prayer service will be held followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the Historic Church of St. Peter, with the Rev. Fr. Efren Ambre as celebrant. Interment in Lafayette Memorial Park.
