Diocese responds to letter’s ‘false statements’
A Letter to the Editor published in the Tuesday, Dec. 31 edition of the Ãå±±½ûµØ has two false statements.
The Diocese has attempted to reach Mr. Ottaviani about his concerns and is continuing to attempt to reach him. Mr. Ottaviani contacted the Diocese of Greensburg via social media. We responded to him and forwarded his contact information to our Facilities Department. Facilities left him a message. He phoned back and left his own message. Our Facilities Department called him back again and he has since not returned the call. He did however continue to comment on social media stating he planned to contact the media because he did not get a response. That is categorically untrue.
Second, to state that the Diocese of Greensburg does nothing to help the homeless in the four counties of the Diocese is patently false. The mission of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg is to help the poor and needy. The goal of our social ministry is to help the people of our region use their knowledge and skills to assess the immediate needs of their neighbors, to respond in effective ways, and to work to change structures that keep people in impoverished situations. As part of our Comprehensive Information and Referral Service, our referral specialists may link callers with various services and/or programs such as:
• Family shelter and housing
• Counseling
• Homeless prevention funds
• Rental assistance, and many more
Since 2009, the Diocese of Greensburg has provided $443,486 in direct funding to several agencies through the Diocesan Poverty Relief Fund Grants. Homeless shelters have been among recipients of the grants over the years. In addition, Catholic Charities has raised nearly $1.3 million in direct assistance for the needy in the diocese through the Communities of Salt and Light Dinner. Also, parishes and schools have conducted countless service projects over the years to help the homeless.
