Time to discuss school district options
It is time for Fayette County school districts to bring the boards together along with our local state reps and discuss our options. Our districts are looking to raise taxes above the index this upcoming budget year due to rising costs.
I do not want to continue to decide as a board member to either cut student activities, athletics, teachers and staff, or raise taxes every year putting the burden on hardworking families, seniors, businesses and property owners. Maybe consolidation isn’t the answer, maybe it’s pieces of that idea that could work and make a difference. Maybe we should refuse to pass a budget, stand up to Harrisburg and make them take a hard look at the struggle in this corner of the state but we must do something and the time is NOW.
These budgets WILL NOT fix themselves. We need to act and we need to act now. We have an obligation to the stakeholders of our districts and the people of Fayette County to make every possible effort to make taxes affordable, take care of our community and provide an excellent education. Let’s think forward and not keep doing the same things over and over again. We can’t say it won’t work if it hasn’t been thoughtfully considered and discussed.Â
