LETTER: Foundation of lies

2 min read

The foundation of the Trump/Republican Party is “The Big Lie” that Trump won the 2020 election. In more than 60 court cases, where actual evidence is required rather than campaign blather, the Republicans lost because Trump was lying.

The hearings concerning Jan. 6 detailed the construction and internal conflicts about pushing The Big Lie, and demonstrated that the people on the inside knew it was a lie, but decided it was a useful lie.

Now we have witnessed the despicable travesty of Trump publicly vowing to uphold our Constitution, then immediately ignoring the Constitution and turning every pledge we have made to our allies, to the people and programs we have supported, the pledges to our own veterans, to our own poor and sick, our school systems, our disaster relief system, our science community, our own justice system, our social security system, even Big Bird … the list grows every day. All our promises have collapsed into lies. We are also handing Ukraine to Vladimir Putin.

When I first moved to Washington, Pa., I heard the picturesque saying, “I wouldn’t trust that guy as far as I could throw a chimney by the smoke.” At that time, it wasn’t being applied to Trump. But our country and the world can now see that it applies to the USA. Trump has a lifelong history of never holding up his end of a deal, and now that applies to us all.

We have been lied to. Our pledges to others in the world have been turned into lies. And our pledges to each other made through our government have been turned into lies.
