Steelers claim QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers
PITTSBURGH — Today likely signals the end of Bruce Gradkowski’s time in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers claimed quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers, who was cut this week from the Chargers after he couldn’t beat out Kellen Clemens or undrafted rookie Mike Bercovici for a backup spot. Gradkowski suffered a hamstring injury in the first preseason game against the Lions, but already had questions surrounding his injured shoulder and if it’d be able to hold up for an entire season.
It was surprising that the Steelers hadn’t made a move on Gradkowski up to this point, but now it appears the writing is on the wall.
The Titans selected Mettenberger in the sixth round of the 2014 draft, and he played in 14 career games over his two seasons in Tennessee. Though he’s probably most known for his antics off the field (pre-game locker room selfies that went viral), rather than anything he did on it.
He finished with more interceptions than touchdowns during that time (12 TDs, 14 INTs), but he is young enough to still have room to room develop. The Steelers have shown previous interest in Mettenberger, as well.
Will he make the 53-man roster with zero time in training camp? It remains to be seen. Will he play Thursday night against the Panthers? No. Steelers PR confirmed he will join the team after the fourth preseason game.
It’s a bit of a surprising move by the Steelers that will play itself out in the next couple of weeks. As for Gradkowski, it appears his days in Pittsburgh are over.
