SummerSlam fallout
A mostly memorable weekend of WWE action has come and gone, and there are plenty of tidbits to touch on.
Roman Reigns finally defeated Brock Lesnar for the Universal title, ending the latter鈥檚 504-day reign.
Plenty of suspense was built into the match as Braun Strowman came out to say he was challenging the winner, but ended up being accidentally speared by Reigns and then given an F-5 by Lesnar.
Ronda Rousey defeated Alexa Bliss to win the Raw women鈥檚 title and the gruesome spot of the night was Rousey putting an armbar on Bliss and snapping her elbow backwards.
Bliss, fortunately, is double-jointed but it made for a vicious visual.
Charlotte Flair defeated Becky Lynch and Smackdown women鈥檚 champion Carmella to win the title, but the story coming out of the match was Lynch laying out her friend.
Coming out of the match, WWE wanted Flair to be the fan favorite between the two but Lynch is so popular right now that it has backfired so far.
Is it me, or is Flair turning into the female version of Reigns, meaning that fans are getting tired of her?
Seth Rollins defeated Dolph Ziggler in a stellar match to win the Intercontinental title and in another big match, The Miz defeated Daniel Bryan.
On Raw, The Shield reunited.
Strowman came out to challenge Reigns after the champ retained against Finn Balor, and Strowman handed the Money in the Bank briefcase to the ref.
But before the bell rang to start the match, Rollins and Ambrose came out and The Shield laid out Strowman.
The NXT show Saturday night was excellent and the Last Man Standing match between Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano was excellent.
Unfortunately, Gargano suffered a knee injury towards the end of the match
Reigns passes Cena
For those wondering why Vince McMahon has continued to make Roman Reigns the centerpiece of WWE, it was announced this week that the new Universal champ has passed John Cena as the highest merchandise seller in WWE.
A lot of fans were annoyed for well over a decade because of Cena being the focal point of the company, but McMahon stuck with him because of the millions and millions of dollars of merchandise that he sold.
And now with The Shield being reunited, at least for the near future, Reigns will be selling even more merchandise.
Rowan joins deep WWE injury list
Erik Rowan, one-half of the tag team The Bludgeon Brothers, tore his biceps at SummerSlam and will be out of action for several months.
This is why The New Day won the tag titles Tuesday at Smackdown.
Other current wrestlers injured recently include Matt Hardy, Nia Jax, Tye Dillinger and Jason Jordan.
GLOW gets third season
It was announced earlier this week that the Netflix show GLOW, based on the 1980s women鈥檚 pro wrestling organization 鈥淕orgeous Ladies Of Wrestling,鈥 has been given a third season.
Look for it to be released next summer.
Pro wrestling class returns
Last fall, Tom Leturgey hosted a two-week pro wrestling class at the CCAC North campus in North Hills.
It was such a rousing success that it is happening again this fall and the dates are on Wednesday, Oct. 10 and 17.
鈥淲e will be looking at the life and deaths of Bruno Sammartino, 鈥淟uscious鈥 Johnny Valiant and Nikolai Volkov,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e will also touch on other newsworthy items.鈥
Horsewomen match coming?
There had been talk in 2017 of WWE doing an elimination match at Survivor Series between its Horsewomen stable and Rousey鈥檚 Horsewomen MMA crew.
It didn鈥檛 happen, but it may at this year鈥檚 version of the show.
For those that don鈥檛 know, WWE鈥檚 Four Horsewomen crew consists of Flair, Lynch, Sasha Banks and Bayley.
Rousey鈥檚 crew consists of NXT鈥檚 Shayna Baszler as well as Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke.
Shafir and Duke are training now, but will they be ready for this year鈥檚 Survivor Series?
On this date:
In 1991, the Road Warriors win the WWE tag team titles becoming the first, and only team, to have held the WWE, NWA and AWA tag titles.
Also on the card, Bret 鈥淗it Man鈥 Hart defeated 鈥淢r. Pefect鈥 Curt Henning to win the Intercontinental title in a classic match.
The marriage between 鈥淢acho Man鈥 Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth took place at the show, and this was around the start of the time that longtime reader Jeremy Miller from Monessen became a huge Savage fan.
This week鈥檚 question:
SummerSlam has been sold out in Brooklyn for three straight years. How does it keep breaking an attendance record? Shawn, Perryopolis.
WWE officially announced a crowd of 16,169 at the Barclays Center for the show with the previous years attendance being 16,128 in 2017, 15,974 in 2016 and 15,702 in 2015.
The numbers can be different based off of the stage setup, but like it was discussed in last week鈥檚 column, WWE often times works numbers to make the attendance look bigger in comparison to past events in the same building.
