Important to grow old gracefully
As we age, how does one grow old gracefully and successfully? How do we keep our health and continue to enjoy an active life? Our bodies and minds are often sending the signals that it is time to slow it down. At first, we tend to fight these signs and perhaps think I am not there yet.
Keeping active has a lot to do with successful aging. Slowing down at the right time also can play a key role and perhaps keep us from a serious injury when we try and push too hard.
It is not about giving up it is about realizing our bodies are changing and the things of youth may best be done in moderation. A few years ago, I made a decision to continue a bit of cross country skiing, but to quit downhill skiing. The risk of injury was higher with downhill and cross country could be done on a nice level or small grade hill.
Two years ago, I completed over 4,000 miles on my bike; however, this year, I am way below 3,000 miles and very pleased even with my reduced mileage. Instead of a 25 mile ride, 10 or 15 miles and a cup of coffee in Ohiopyle make for a great day. Plenty of great scenery and wildlife add to the joy of the bike ride. I plan on a short ride today after I finish this article. Sunshine, calm wind and 40 degrees is all you need for a pleasant experience.
At this time of the year, sometimes the hard part is just getting the motivation to get out and get some exercise. The cold and snow make it more difficult, but if you pay attention to the weather and are flexible you can usually find a few hours to go for a walk, hike or a bike ride. The worst part for me is all the extra clothing one needs to be outside. Hat, gloves, scarves and extra layers add a lot of weight, but once out and about it can be a real joy. Christmas day I took a nice walk for about an hour. It took a lot of motivation, but sunshine filled the sky, the wind was calm and the temperature was near 40. Coming back in for a warm cup of tea, I figured I had earned the right to another Christmas cookie
With the New Year approaching, we all usually think about how our lives could be different if we were able to modify or amend our behavior. What about a walking program or a gym membership? Some insurance plans in an effort to encourage us to stay healthy include gym membership, or home video exercise programs. Winter can be long and dreary if we let it. Why not include an active program that includes an exercise program that works for you? One that will include participation without a lot of risk of getting hurt or injured.
One that will allow us to grow old gracefully and enjoy the benefits of a life well lived. Wishes for a year filled with lots of walks, hikes, bike rides and good health.
