Vikings edge Monessen in WCCA Showcase
Mount Pleasant held off Monessen’s fourth quarter rally Saturday for a slim 41-40 victory in the WCCA Boys Basketball Showcase played at Hempfield High School.
The game was tied at 22 at halftime, but the Vikings (4-1) pulled ahead in the third quarter, 34-26.
The Greyhounds (0-5) fell just short in the final quarter with a 14-7 scoring advantage.
Jake Johnson led Mount Pleasant with 15 points. Jonas King added 12.
Monessen’s Marquell Smith tied for game-scoring honors with 15 points. Taylon Lowe finished with 14.
Derry 56, Southmoreland 44 — The tough start for the Scotties continued at the WCCA Basketball Showcase with a loss to the Trojans.
Southmoreland slides to 0-5 with the loss. Derry wins for the first time this season, improving to 1-3.
Ringgold 63, West Allegheny 58 — The Rams finished strong in the final quarter for a non-conference victory over the visiting Indians.
Ringgold (3-1) held a 13-11 lead after the first quarter, but West Allegheny tied the game at 28 at halftime. The teams remained tied after three quarters, 46-46.
The Rams secured the win with a 17-12 fourth quarter advantage.
West Allegheny had a 5-0 run for a 51-50 lead, but Nate Pajak hit a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 53-51 lead with about five minutes left in the game. Luke Wyvratt’s field goal with one minute remaining gave the Rams a 61-56 lead.
Chris Peccon led the way for Ringgold with 20 points. Demetrius Butler (18), Wyvratt (13), and Pajak (10) also finished in double figures.
Joe Pustover led West Allegheny with 15 points.
Girls basketball
Latrobe 70, Ringgold 41 — The Lady Rams were unable to rebound from a 17-point deficit in the first quarter for a non-section loss at Latrobe.
The Lady Wildcats (2-2) led 22-5, 36-19 and 57-26 at the quarter breaks.
Nya Adams scored 18 points for the Lady Rams (2-3).
Rachel Ridilla finished with a game-high 26 points in the victory. Ava Vitula added 13.
